DeSantis must have told Trump in private months ago. Obviously Trump failed to talk him out of it. I don’t know what his hurry was . He could have waited 4 years. Perhaps DeSantis believed our growing dictatorship had to be fought now or it would be too late to reverse it.
He does whatever his handlers and financial backers tell him to do. That's how Ivy League lawyers who spend their careers in government operate.

Or...perhaps DeSantis believes that Trump might be eliminated from being able to run by the DS left, finally. I’ve been saying we need a backup plan. Maybe DeSantis thinks so, too.
I don’t think DeSantis told Trump anything of the kind. Trump heard it through the political grapevine longer ago than people may think.
