Montana becomes first state to ban drag reading sessions for children in public schools and libraries after Governor said it is 'wildly inappropriate for little kids to be exposed to sexualized content'

Montana has become the first state to specifically ban people dressed in drag from reading books to children at public schools and libraries.

Republican governor Greg Gianforte signed the bill on Monday because he 'believes it's wildly inappropriate for little kids, especially preschoolers and kids in elementary school, to be exposed to sexualized content,' spokesperson Kaitlin Price said.

But the law is unique among efforts by states to block drag performances as it does not require a sexual element to a performance for it to be banned.

Bills in Florida and Tennessee also appear to try to ban drag reading events, but both require the performances to be sexual in nature, which could be up for interpretation. Both bills also face legal challenges.

House Bill 359 was co-sponsored by more than half of the Republican-controlled legislature and took effect immediately after it was signed.

The bill initially sought to ban minors from attending drag performances, which were defined as shows that tended to 'excite lustful thoughts.'

The legislation was later amended to ban minors from attending sexually oriented or obscene performances on public property.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. Braxton Mitchell, said he sponsored the bill 'because drag shows in recent years have been specifically aimed at children,' and spoke of online videos that show children at drag shows.

'In my humble opinion, there's no such thing as a family-friendly drag show,' Mitchell said in April.

He suggested that drag story hours and other family-oriented drag performances were part of a 'sick agenda' damaging to a child's 'psychology and general welfare'.

The question isn’t why children should children be exposed to drag queens. It’s why do drag queens want to expose themselves to children?

What the hell is wrong with the parents who would expose their kids to this.

“It’s why do drag queens want to expose themselves to children?”

I so agree!!

If they really want to read to kids in schools and libraries then dress like normal people and read! How hard is that? Don’t look like something from my last nightmare,

Yes, sexualizing children is a bad thing, but only if you’re a conservative, Christian extremist. It’s a controversial stance that is opposed by many community and elected officials and even clergymen. Did you ever think there would be a day when pedophilia would be publicly supported and defended? And practiced openly by the president? Is this where we are?

Children should be children.

Thank goodness sanity still exists. :)

Brainwashed Karens who think having grown men pretending to be women thrusting their genitals at their kids is an enlightened experience.

Good for Montana. Other states need to follow suit.

Do that crap in private clubs and away from kids - not on public property and not around children.

Why is it that we never hear about drag queers reading books at senior homes?

As it should be. If parents want to indoctrinate and politicize their kids, do it at home on their own time. Want a queer club, fine, just meet somewhere that is not funded by taxpayers. IF (big if) there is a market for queer clothing, invest and open a LGBQT store. We will see just how mainstream this insidious movement really is.

Heard that question last week, it really is a good one.

Thank God. And we should stop calling these “drag” reading sessions. If all that happened was a man dressed in conservative women’s dress read a normal, age-appropriate story book to kids at a library, there would be zero uproar. It may have been a one day story but no one would have cared. The issue is a coordinated agenda of having men dressed half-naked or in tight, overly-sexualized clothes like strippers (or worse - wearing sex toys) reading wildly age-inappropriate sexualized books to kids.
