Senators issued satellite phones, offered demonstrations on upgraded security devices
CBS News ^ | 5/22/25

Amid growing concerns of security risks to members of Congress, more than 50 senators have been issued satellite phones for emergency communication, people familiar with the measures told CBS News. The devices are part of a series of new security measures being offered to senators by the Senate Sergeant at Arms, who took over shortly after the assault on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The satellite phone technology has been offered to all 100 senators. CBS News has learned at least 50 have accepted the phones, which Senate administrative staff recommend senators keep in close proximity during their travels.

In testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee last month, Senate Sergeant at Arms Karen Gibson said satellite communication is being deployed "to ensure a redundant and secure means of communication during a disruptive event."

Gibson said the phones are a security backstop in the case of an emergency that "takes out communications" in part of America. Federal funding will pay for the satellite airtime needed to utilize the phone devices.

A Department of Homeland Security advisory said satellite phones are a tool for responding to and coordinating government services in the case of a "man-made" or natural disaster that wipes out communication.

Because the Constitution lays out the Continuity of Government, there is a major reason to be concerned here that it is only the HALF the Senate got these phones.

Follow the Constitution and grasp that in SHTF it is planned to be made obsolete.

I remember some series about Bent Coppers in Britain.

If in trouble, they would make a call, with some code phrase.

Add heck would break loose, armed cops, unmarked suvs, etc. would whisk them away.

I reported on this yesterday. And yes it appears only the Senate has been offered the Sat phones. And, only about 50 senators have accepted them. That feels like its running along party lines. Imma guess the Republicans are accepting and the Dems not so much.

This begs several theories. I certainly have a couple.

“I pray no Republicans take these phones”

I would argue only Republicans are taking these phones. If you were trying to flee you would not want to have a Sat phone on you which can track you to within 3 ft.

If they were expecting a FF I think the House would be offered Sat phones. Or at least the House leadership. If the military is getting ready to step in they are going to want at least part of the Senate to present a unified front to the public and to assist with temporary succession scenarios until the 2024 election can be held.

Its definitely getting interesting.

You did? It is not in your posting history.

Second, what you are stating fails to make any sense. Republicans would respect the succession as laid out in the Constitution.

This looks more like a set up to tyranny.

If it is a military take-over (highly doubt since the purge), then McCarthy would be the logical temporary President based on the Constitutional Continuity of Government.

I have serious news for you my friend. Martial law suspends the constitution. Under martial law we would be following military law not civil law. Before you start arguing back at me about it peruse the military law of war manual while keeping in mind that Donald Trump’s executive order putting us in a state of national emergency is still in effect.

All this stuff was put into place by Trump before he left office. This will not be some Willy nilly military coup. Its all predicated on the 2020 election being stolen and a belligerent force aided by a foreign nation taking over the govt in an act of war.

I guess they don’t like spam calls.
Most likely they don’t want anyone tracking their calls to donors and influence peddlers.

this is interesting per the article:

“A Department of Homeland Security advisory said satellite phones are a tool for responding to and coordinating government services in the case of a “man-made” or natural disaster that wipes out communication.

Gibson has also opened an office “demonstration space” in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building to offer senators and staff an exhibition of new home state office security upgrades. The demonstration room offers exhibitions of “duress buttons,” mail screening devices and safety glass to reduce the risk of attacks.”

and this:

“In her testimony before the Senate panel in April, Gibson reported, “Our team provided initial physical security enhancements for 31 offices and improved existing security for 52 others in 2022. Maintaining security systems in good working order is a priority, and to support this effort our team conducted over 622 service calls to maintain, repair, and or test and inspect state office physical security systems in 2022.”

I reported on this yesterday.

Help me out here. I would like to know where you "reported" on this? I am not arguing with you other than anything you have said does not align with what I am viewing.

So I would like to follow-up on your "report." I am open to seeing your data points, but not some wild-eyed slam about a military action on DC. That is just NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

We have been in a state of National Emergency since the Carter years. List of national emergencies in the United States

And it looks like the efbeeye might have ironed the flag before carefully arranging and displaying it for the cameras. I would ask, “How stupid do they think we are?” but I guess I know the answer to that.

OK Karen, ๐Ÿ˜† This was in the Washington Times, CBS news and the military Times yesterday. Are you with me so far? Good. I read about it and mentioned it in some detail on one or two threads yesterday. If you researched my posting history as I believe you said you did then you would have seen it.

Based on your last couple of posts to me its apparent that you are so tardy to the party that I would exhaust myself trying to catch you up. My advice is go online and spend some time researching what is actually going on in the country. Or you can just sit there in your chair until at some point the EBS comes on your screen and a military message will fill you in. You can argue with your TV screen and smartphone because its doubtful the internet will be up for a couple weeks and I won’t be available. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It would be safer for senators to do as drug dealers: buy burner phones.
