he West and Ukraine have for several months been pondering the prospects for a major counter-offensive by the Ukrainian army. World leaders, top officials, politicians, military analysts and journalists are all guessing when it will start, its main attack direction, and its possible outcomes.
And the West is now increasingly expressing fears that Ukraine won't be able to break the Russian army's back in one mighty blow. Ukrainian officials too have started to call for caution: expectations are too high, no decisive victory is coming is the message.
The words of Volodymyr Havrylov, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, resonated against this background. He told UK newspaper the Independent: "We will launch our counter-offensive – when and where doesn’t matter now. (Then,) Russia will be in panic; you will see a lot of panic."
But as of now, this remains only brave talk. There is no clear timetable for a Ukrainian offensive.
“We really need some more time, not too much. We will be ready in some time … I can't share with you," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on May 15. But he did share with journalists his belief that Ukraine would win by 2024.
At least 12 brigades with a total of 30,000 soldiers have been trained for the upcoming major Ukrainian offensive, Western politicians and experts say. Nine of them were trained in Western countries. According to estimates by Bloomberg, Kyiv has received at least 200 tanks and 300 infantry fighting vehicles from its U.S. and European partners.

What to expect of Ukraine’s counter-offensive:
Deaths.
Senseless, wasteful, ugly deaths.
Expect no counter-offensive, either in the Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. It’s BS.
Both Russian and Ukrainian brigades are quite small by western standards.
Expect to give Ukraine billions more $ for the bonfire of Ukrainian blood.

You’re probably right — no grand counter-offensive is in the offing. It might have been possible at one time, but the Russians have been very successful in sniffing out the Ukrainians’ ammo dumps and equipment and blowing them to smithereens. Just last week they blew up a $500,000,000 stash of UK-provided depleted uranium shells, hence the radioactive cloud making its way over Eastern Europe.
A very knowledgeable retired officer told me the new forces can be a game changer and start to push the Russians out.
However, he said that project will take at least 2 years.
It’s a war. They aren’t fought on 24 hour news cycles.
