Once again, SNAP is a political football: And Americans suffer for it

More than half of all students, and nearly 40 percent of all faculty at New Mexico’s higher education institutions don’t have enough food to eat. The findings, from a new state-funded study, reveal troubling statistics representative of a worsening problem across America. New Mexico is taking steps to address it — and other states should pay attention.

We’ve known about the problem of food insecurity among U.S. college students for a while. But the New Mexico research casts a wider spotlight on hunger’s broader impact on higher education teachers and administrators. It’s yet another data point that shows just how far — and deep — food insecurity’s reach in America has grown.

When I was in college I remember one time having a potato for dinner. It was all I had.

Was living large when I could afford a pack of hot dogs.

My brother and I both moved out at 17, I went to work he went to work and school. We lived on bean and cheese burritos and cheap food for many years. When I went to Colorado and worked on an oil rig, we only ate once a day, we always had money for beer, but food was a luxury.

WE NEVER COLLECTED ANY ASSISTANCE OF ANY KIND.

I don’t care about their food problems, grow up and get a job, learn to manage your money and learn to eat CHEAP FOOD!!!

"don’t have enough food to eat"

All this makes so much sense when obesity continues to be a major health problem in this country.

Am I really supposed to be this stupid?

“nearly 40 percent of all faculty at New Mexico’s higher education institutions don’t have enough food to eat”

WTF? Maybe they better get rid of those diversity positions and have the overpaid professors redistribute their income to other faculty.

Don’t they pay these college teachers? 40 percent don’t have enough to eat? This seems unbelievable.

As I have often said, we won't be truly free, as a nation, until all Americans, of all races, creeds, and ages, and from all actual nations, all persons, legal, or undocumented, get all the food they need and want, the education and housing they need or want, enough money to sustain them in a manner in which they choose, and the ability to vote as early and as often as they like, that these legions of humanities majors may supplant the sorry bastards that pay for it all, and bring about the decline and fall of our racist, sexist, classist national experiment.

.......More than half of all students, and nearly 40 percent of all faculty at New Mexico's higher education institutions don't have enough food to eat.......

I am confused? What the heck does snap have to do with students and faculty at New Mexico's higher education institutions?

Specifically, if wages for faculty are so low, that people can't afford to eat, then they should do something else for a living, until such time that supply and demand establish a new price equilibrium. I suspect that “faculty” is defined somewhere to include teaching assistants, student help that grades papers, etc. If PhD’s are being paid poverty wages at New Mexico higher education institutions, that is not a problem for the federal government to solve with SNAP cards, it is a problem for the State Legislature and the Universities to solve.

As to students? When I was in college, I had a couple of part time jobs during the school year and a really well paying union job during the summers. Kids need to understand that they need to work and study.

The federal government SNAP program is a safety net for the general public who are down on their luck. The arguments are just crazy.

We always have a simultaneous obesity epidemic and food insecurity.

The media should pick one.

Oh bullshit. I live in the Albuquerque metro and have been near that school. Folks here have no issues getting the calories they need and could well do with fewer of them. The only ones not getting enough to eat are the druggies on the streets. Even the panhandlers look like they’re eating well enough.

Take out a second mortgage on your Escalade and use the money buy tuna, beans, peas, chicken, whole grain pasta, etc. instead of beer, extensions, nails, cigarettes and drugs.

Why must SNAP be slashed, but not a single penny can be cut from the holy Defense budget...a record-high, despite the fact that we no longer fighting the "war on terror" in Iraq or Afghanistan? Why is it McCarthy is not asking for a single penny of Biden's requests for Ukraine be trimmed? A lot of seniors rely on SNAP. The GOP is more interested in Lockheed and Zelenskyyy.

I literally find this impossible to believe. What's the definition of "enough food to eat"? The photo in the accompanying article shows an overweight woman pushing a grocery cart in a store aisle.

I'm sure random Internet photos of university students and faculty will show that the majority of them are thin and gaunt from all their missed meals.

Average maximum monthly snap benefit for family of 4 is $918.
That doesn’t spell food insecurity to me. You don’t need steak every day. Fish, chicken and burgers will do.

Well the Biden adminitration unleashed an energy policy that drove up energy costs, causing massive food inflation, then launched an orgy of deficit spending that devalued the dollar, causing massive food inflation, while increasing the cost of money to make production more expensive. Government Covid policies and subsidies encouraged laying out from work, depleting the ranks of critical employees in farming, food processing, and trucking industries, thus causing shortages of meat and processed foods, resulting in more food price inflation.

In a nutshell, any sad sacks who don’t have enough money for food can thank Joseph “China Whore” Biden and his Merry Puppeteers. Chew on this free tip: Next time and every time, vote for prosperity instead of poverty.
