Budowsky: Jimmy Carter: A great man, a good president, and a patriot
The Hill ^ | 05/17/2023 | BRENT BUDOWSKY

The state of American politics is not as uplifting these days as it once was. So this seems a good time to write about something more hopeful — one of the most noble and worthy political leaders ever to lift our nation.

Former President James Earl Carter (D) was a great president and is a great man. He is a devout Christian, a patriotic American, a devoted husband and father, a charitable neighbor, and a powerful voice for human rights and democracy around the world. He is a man who spends every day trying to make his country, community and world a better place.

I do. My grandfather was one of the lucky ones. He escaped in a balloon.

His fierce antipathy towards Israel and his fulsome benevolence towards the “Palestinians” gives me ample reason to doubt that Carter is such a wonderful man.

This guy sounds nostalgic for the Carter era.

Carter was some sort of visionary on global warming decades ago?

Selective memories of someone from decades ago will be distorted.

Ross Denton: Rodney, can you please tell us, how big is the president?

Rodney Dangerfield: Oh, he’s a big guy, I’ll tell you that, he’s a big guy. I tell you he’s so big, I saw him sitting in the George Washington bridge dangling his feet in the water! He’s a big guy!

Rosalynn Carter: Oh my God! Jimmy! Oh God!

Rodney Dangerfield: Oh, he’s big, I’ll tell you that, boy. He’s so big that when two girls make love to him at the same time, they never meet each other! He’s a big guy, I’ll tell you!

Rosalynn Carter: Oh no! Oh Jimmy! My Jimmy!

Rodney Dangerfield: I don’t want to upset you lady, he’s big, you know what I mean? Why he could have an affair with the Lincoln Tunnel! I mean, he’s really high! He’s big, I’ll tell you! He’s a big guy!

Rosalynn Carter: No! No! No!

Ross Denton: Rodney, thank you very much. You can go.

Rodney Dangerfield: It’s my pleasure. He’s way up there, lady! you know what I mean?

Biden isn’t worthy to shine Jimmy’s shoes, and I’m no Carter fan.

I agree that Jimmy Carter is a good man and a patriot. I believe everything he did was done in the belief of what was good for the country (although I disagreed with it) and not done for political gain.

He never cheated on his wife and is a faithful Christian. There is also his work with Habitat for Humanity. I could never bring myself to hate him like I do the slimy Uniparty politicians of today. I hold Mittens Romney and Paul Ryan in far more contempt. In fact, I never felt any contempt for Carter.

He lost re-election because every night Americans were reminded on the news how powerless we were to do anything about the plight of the Iranian hostages. And never forget that he authorized a rescue mission, and when it failed most horribly, he came out on live television and accepted the blame.

The establishment Democrats did not like him, and they pushed forward Ted Kennedy (called 'Swimmer' by Rush) to run against him. Although Carter beat him in the primary, the Democrat party was not united. And the press would have much preferred Kennedy over Carter.

I remember well his 18% prime rate on millions of dollars of development loans.

I also remember something about his Secret Service Agents saying he was a mean, petty, fake and vile person and they did not like him. So, arguably at least, he was not a “great man” as the writer claims.

Ronald Reagan and Trump, in contrast, the agents reportedly loved.

I do appreciate Carter’s formidable charity work and his fidelity to his wife.

I agree 100%. He hasn’t been wrong on that issue just once; but multiple, multiple times.

Nixon didn’t trust Israel or the Jews either. Here’s a quote:

“They put the Jewish interest above America’s interest, and it’s about goddamn time that the Jew in America realizes he’s an American first and a Jew second.”
