There sure is a lot of fighting on Free Republic, about this potential Trump vs. DeSantis primary battle for the GOP presidential nomination.

“DeSantis to huddle with donors in Miami, another sign presidential campaign is imminent”

I think an intervention might be best, based on what we’ve discussed in the past here, but it’s his future, not ours...

Fox News appears to be pro-DeSantis. He’s getting very favorable coverage from them. This does not make me feel more comfortable with DeSantis (who I generally like).

I love how he has to check in with donors. Oh yea, beacon of independence coming through. Hopefully Trump goes up after the announcement

Don’t forget the real goal is to split the vote.

He has no chance to win, but if he can get 20% or so (my guess, maybe more or maybe less), a dim will win and the Bushies will be perfectly happy to have a dim rather than Trump. They can steal under any dim candidate.

Voting for DeSantis is sticking our chin out for a sucker punch.

The guy must just ignore all the polls. I wonder who he thinks is going to vote for him? I’m serious. I mean does he think Trump supporters are going to abandon Trump?

Why not.... state law has been “modified” to allow it so.

Let the bloodletting begin.

No politician is going to be perfect. I like DeSantis. I think he’s been a good governor.

But like Cruz, Palin and others that were pushed into the spotlight too soon, he’s not ready for primetime national coverage.

I think ‘28 is his year to pursue the Presidency. Right now we need a bull in the china shop. That’s Trump!

He should be huddling with someone to write him an anti-psychotic medication. The guy has almost totally destroyed himself cozying up to oligarchs and trying to overthrow Trump without having the guts to say so.

So many people miss the fundamental difference between Trump and DeSantis. With DeSantis, you’re voting for a team - a team of which DeSantis is only a part, and not even the most important part. He’s the public face. His job is to go sell the team to the electorate. He does that with the help of consultants who assist him in selling the myth that he’s in charge.

The naive picture people have of the process is of DeSantis, on his own, deciding he wants to be Governor of Florida, President of the United States, or whatever, because he really wants to make a difference for the country and believes he’s the best man for the job, so he goes out and contacts some consultants to help him in his quest.

The truth of the matter is pretty near the opposite. The donors and consultants are in charge. They look for candidates to back - candidates who they think they’ll be able to count on to protect their interests. Then they reach out to them and cultivate them - stroking their ego and telling them that they have a bright future and should consider higher office. They offer help all along the way, helping him take each successive step. In short, they’re running the show. Focusing on the successes DeSantis may or may not have had in Florida, misses that essential point, and is irrelevant.

Trump is unique in many ways, but probably the most important one is that he’s in charge of his campaign/administration. He may make mistakes, but they’re HIS mistakes. He may get good or bad advice from people, he may choose to follow their advice or not follow it, but ultimately, he’s the one who makes the final decision.

Just announce already. This prevaricating is making me like the guy a lot less than I would otherwise.
