DeSantis to huddle with donors in Miami, another sign presidential campaign is imminent
Fox News ^ | May 16, 2023 | Paul Steinhauser

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is calling on his top financial backers to huddle with him in Miami next week, another signal that the popular two-term conservative governor is moving closer to launching a White House campaign and jumping into an increasingly crowded GOP nomination race.

The meeting will take place May 24-25 and potentially extend another day, a source who received an invitation told Fox News on Monday. The source added that he was told by DeSantis officials to "block off" those dates "on your calendar."

The DeSantis political team confirmed to Fox News that the gathering in Miami is "a pre-briefing for our top supporters."

By law, DeSantis cannot receive or ask for contributions for a presidential campaign unless he has formally declared his candidacy. However, the governor can meet with prospective donors to brief them on his 2024 plans if he does not solicit contributions.

Next week’s meeting with donors appears to be the latest in a series of moves in recent days that indicate the launch of DeSantis' 2024 presidential campaign is nearing. Among them was the move Monday by DeSantis’ political team from the Republican Party of Florida headquarters...

Dan Eberhart, an oil drilling chief executive officer and a prominent Republican donor and bundler who contributed $100,000 and raised half a million dollars for former President Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign but who is now a DeSantis supporter, told Fox News that "the DeSantis march to an announcement gets excruciatingly close with the check in with his donors."

Those who sat out for MCcain and Romney have been proven more than justified. Desanctimonius is in the same boat. Working with the Repukes to kneecap Trump says way too much about him to ignore

I agree with you.

There are some Freepers would rather vote for Biden over DeSantis so they can teach the GOP a lesson.

I disagree with that, but some people here have told me that they prefer another four years of Biden and Democrats, if Trump isn’t the GOP nominee.

I've asked desantis supporters/likely rebranded nevertrumpers why they keep pushing desantis as the best person for president.

Desantis who deliberately lies about things.

Plays games and jerks people around with announcing his run for president.

Is endorsed and supported by swampy GOPe, big money and hedgefunds.

And willing to do illegal acts in illegally converting state campaign donations to use for his run for president.

Funny, they don't answer.

Maybe they identify with these attributes desantis has shown or think they are great?

Don’t forget the real goal is to split the vote.

He has no chance to win, but if he can get 20% or so (my guess, maybe more or maybe less), a dim will win and the Bushies will be perfectly happy to have a dim rather than Trump. They can steal under any dim candidate.

Voting for DeSantis is sticking our chin out for a sucker punch.

“DeSantis seen spooning with Jeb, a sign bis campaign is rock solid”

Listen, if DeSantis wants to go windsurfing and then skip along the beach holding hands with Jeb, that’s their business and nobody elses!

No. It was sarcasm. It's what the uniparty PAC is saying to DeSantis. They are pushing him. They want him to take out Trump. They don't want DeSantis to "back down". They will label him as somebody who "backs down", if he doesn't enter the race.

There sure is a lot of fighting on Free Republic, about this potential Trump vs. DeSantis primary battle for the GOP presidential nomination.

Yes, indeed, very similar to previous primary battles on this site. This will prove to be very interesting

There are options besides voting for the gopE/Elite or the Rat/commies.

Write in, 3rd party, Not voting.

Who knows what level of vote fraud will be hoisted upon the citizenry in 2024

The guy must just ignore all the polls. I wonder who he thinks is going to vote for him? I’m serious. I mean does he think Trump supporters are going to abandon Trump?

Why not.... state law has been “modified” to allow it so.

Let the bloodletting begin.

Do you think Trump will win the general election if DeSantis supporters are as headstrong as only-Trumpers? That might present a problem in a close election. But, hey, 4 more years of Joe Biden is no worse than DeSantis in the White House. I’ll vote for Trump if he wins the primary. I don’t even have to think about it.

No politician is going to be perfect. I like DeSantis. I think he’s been a good governor.

But like Cruz, Palin and others that were pushed into the spotlight too soon, he’s not ready for primetime national coverage.

I think ‘28 is his year to pursue the Presidency. Right now we need a bull in the china shop. That’s Trump!

He should be huddling with someone to write him an anti-psychotic medication. The guy has almost totally destroyed himself cozying up to oligarchs and trying to overthrow Trump without having the guts to say so.

“I love how he has to check in with donors.”

indeed ... i don’t think Trump “checked in” with any donors at all before he rode down the elevator ...

So many people miss the fundamental difference between Trump and DeSantis. With DeSantis, you’re voting for a team - a team of which DeSantis is only a part, and not even the most important part. He’s the public face. His job is to go sell the team to the electorate. He does that with the help of consultants who assist him in selling the myth that he’s in charge.

The naive picture people have of the process is of DeSantis, on his own, deciding he wants to be Governor of Florida, President of the United States, or whatever, because he really wants to make a difference for the country and believes he’s the best man for the job, so he goes out and contacts some consultants to help him in his quest.

The truth of the matter is pretty near the opposite. The donors and consultants are in charge. They look for candidates to back - candidates who they think they’ll be able to count on to protect their interests. Then they reach out to them and cultivate them - stroking their ego and telling them that they have a bright future and should consider higher office. They offer help all along the way, helping him take each successive step. In short, they’re running the show. Focusing on the successes DeSantis may or may not have had in Florida, misses that essential point, and is irrelevant.

Trump is unique in many ways, but probably the most important one is that he’s in charge of his campaign/administration. He may make mistakes, but they’re HIS mistakes. He may get good or bad advice from people, he may choose to follow their advice or not follow it, but ultimately, he’s the one who makes the final decision.
