It has been nine years since gunfire erupted in the early morning at a Killeen apartment building, leading to the death of a beloved local police detective and nine years in jail with no trial for a Killeen resident.
Killeen resident Marvin Louis Guy, 58, was booked into jail on May 10, 2014. He is still being held in lieu of bonds totaling $4 million on four capital felony charges — including $1.5 million on the most serious charge of capital murder of a peace officer.
Guy is accused of shooting KPD Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie, and other officers, during a no-knock raid on Guy’s residence on Circle M Drive on May 9, 2014.
Guy has claimed self-defense, saying that he did not know police officers were entering his residence during the 5 a.m. raid. In the years since the raid, no-knock warrants have come under fire nationwide, including in Killeen where the local police department is now banned from doing them.
The trial has been delayed for several reasons over the years, including: Defense attorneys saying the DA's office has not released all the evidence in the case; Guy's lawyers being fired or quiting; and Guy's health.
A new trial date has been set for Oct. 30, according to court records. On Monday, outside the justice center, the family was joined by representatives with Pure Justice, Elmer Geronimo Pratt Gun Club, Huey P. Newton Gun Club, the NAACP of Austin, Black Opportunities, Tiffany D. Loftin and others.
What’s going on?
My second reaction: There is more to this story than what we see here.
Who is Marvin Guy and why would anyone care?
Well...if you’d read the story you could answer that yourself.
My thoughts exactly!
lol.
Delayed "over the years"?
It's been delayed almost a decade.
How do they get away with this?
What happened to a speedy trial?
Too many lawyers and too much red tape would be my guess.
But that's ok. A lesson in musical history...
Whatever it is I don't believe this is anything more than intentional yellow journalism.
I don’t read stories about people I don’t know.
Are you saying you meant Marvin Gaye?
I tried to find other articles with more information about Marvin Guy but came up blank, and as far as I see it, they need to let an innocent Guy go free with not even a slap on the wrist.
I still don't know who Guy is and well, I don't care.
Guy is a black guy who police thought was a drug dealer. They did a no knock raid on his house at 5 AM. They found no drugs. Guy is accused of shooting 4 police officers, killing a police detective. Guy’s brother claims the officer was killed by friendly fire from another policeman. It seems clear that Guy opened fire thinking people were invading / attacking and not knowing they were police. He would have no reason to shoot policemen. Bail was set at $4 million for capital murder.
All this is available in the article cited and by doing a Google search. I don’t see the point of comments like “I don’t know or care who he is.”
Leo’s will say no-knock, dynamic entries are safer for them. They try to catch occupant while they are surprised, confused and disoriented. If confused, disoriented occupant defends home against unknown assailants and shoots leo it’s murder. If leo’s make a mistake and shoot innocent person or someone holding phone while dialing 911 it’s just an unfortunate event, you know they only had a split second to make their decision. Even if you hear someone screaming “police” above the sound of splintering door frames and flash bang bombs, it’s no guarantee it’s legit leo. Criminals have learned to shout that they are police as they smash into your home in order to cause you to hesitate.
Well. As long as the LEOs get home safe at night....
Defendants who know they will be found guilty and sentenced to death or hard prison time have every incentive to drag out their trials in hope that witnesses die or go Biden, evidence is lost or spoiled, etc. Criminals would also rather be in jail than state prison, and will drag out the trail part so that they end up released soon after conviction for time-served.
My guess is that Marvin Guy is playing bs delay games to the hilt for his own advantage.
