The Department of Energy proposed new appliance rules that would cut water and energy use limits for Americans' dishwashers well below current levels.
The proposal would limit dishwashers to using 3.2 gallons of water per cycle, far below the current federal limit of 5 gallons. The rules would also require manufacturers to reduce their products' energy consumption by nearly 30%.
Most dishwashers on the market are already well below the federal standard of 5 gallons, with most using 3.5 gallons per cycle or less.
Dishwashers are not the only appliances Biden's DOE has set its sights on, however, as the regulator is also considering crackdowns on washers, dryers and refrigerators that manufacturers say could reduce performance.
The Biden administration has made clear that the new limits are coming thanks to the president's climate agenda.
"Collectively these energy efficiency actions … support President Biden's ambitious clean energy agenda to combat the climate crisis," the DOE wrote earlier this year.
The proposed rules come on the heels of a national reckoning over gas stoves. While top Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer argued there was nothing to worry about, his own state banned gas stoves just last week.

Yep, here, too. Then I discovered that I can put them on a counter-top drying mat and let the air finish the drying. I hardly ever run the DW any more. Of course, it’s a lot easier when there are only two of us. My wife still likes to load the DW.
Why are scent boosters so popular? Because modern washers don’t get your clothes clean and modern dryers barely get them dry enough to not have full-scale MOLD growing in your blue jean crotch area!
The wife and I use the latest and greatest technology for drying, at least during the summer...wind and solar! We have a clothesline!

I hate that my clothes washer won’t do a hot water rinse. Also, IIRC, in days past an normal wash cycle automatically included a second rinse. Now I have to choose that option. At least there IS that option.
SAME as those ‘low water’ washing machines.
They’ll have outlawed horse and other livestock flatulence by then. Stock up on good walking shoes before they take those away too.
DOG does ‘pre-cleaning’ of all my dishes.

I have noticed that “Self-cleaning” ovens are no longer advertised.
THE “CLEANING” cycle turned up the heat to about 550-600 degrees & turned dirty oven smutz into charcoal bits.
Clotheslines are banned in almost every HOA area.
Oh great. Instead of almost four hours to wash a load, it’ll be eight hours...and you can’t use hot water.
I have a Whirlpool dishwasher that is at least 10 years old, and it is AWESOME! It is not one of their high end models; bought it at Lowes. We have really hard water, too. I think, though, that the secret to its great results is the fact that I use Finish dishwashing pods (used to be called Electrasol), and always keep the jet dry compartment full. I have tried other dishwashing detergents in the past, and the results were always a disappointment. I don’t do much rinsing of my dishes beforehand, unless there is cornmeal on my dishes; that won’t dissolve out completely, and will end up on one or two glasses, if I don’t rinse that off my dishes first. I also always use the pots and pans cycle; it washes longer.
And to fit the energy guidelines they use smaller motors and lighter gears that wear out faster. And IIRC, the total energy used is similar to the old appliances, but the rules are rated in energy used per hour, so by cutting the energy per hour in half it takes twice as long to run the cycle.
Even in our “new “ oven (maybe 10 years old now) it takes forever to warm up to 375 degrees. About 12 minutes!
This is dumb as crap!! The dishwasher is one of the least energy consuming appliances in the house. If you want to cut down on your power/natural gas bills you focus on winning the big battles. Like A/C and heat (almost everybody's #1 energy consumption battle). #2 is the water heater. I bet even the lights in the house total more power consumed than the dishwasher running even once per day. Definitely the clothes dryer and washer use more power than the dishwasher.
But some bureaucrat at the EPA is making herself feel like she's saving the world by passing some rule that helps in virtually no way but causes the rest of us more problems.
I hand wash dishes and use 20 gallons of water. My tankless water heater runs the whole time. Oh well. FJB
