Scott Winkler, who lives in the area, has been a loyal customer of the Rite Aid store for three years. He recently found out the pharmacy was closing, leaving him and other residents in the neighborhood without easy access to essential medications.
"Somebody has to stand up for what's right, and that is a pharmacy that is an intricate part of this area," Winkler said. "Now it's gone, and the only thing we have left is Family Dollar — and hopefully they won't close."
With the pharmacy closing, Winkler will no longer be able to walk over to get his medications. Instead, he will have to take two buses and go to a nearby Walmart to fill his prescriptions.
Winkler is particularly concerned about the impact on the elderly residents in the community who may have difficulty traveling to get their medication.
Mayor Malik Evans expressed his disappointment with Rite Aid's decision to close the pharmacy. He said that the city had been working to keep such stores open and was caught off guard by the announcement.
"It's still shameful that in this day and age we still have stores that have been supported by the city of Rochester for hundreds of years, but they have no problem turning their back on our city," Evans said.

Rochester’s a democrat hellhole. The good people need to leave...
For hundreds of years we prosecuted criminals who shoplifted. Now we don’t because of mayors like Evans.
Malik . . .
Havent they heard of online pharmacies.
What kind of area is this?
...uh, it’s ‘urban’...
There are mail services for meds. And just about everything else.
Repeal that no-bail law ASAP.
Malik means “king” in Arabic. This is king of the clowns in this case.
You get what you vote for.
It’s a Drug Desert?
“...the only thing we have left is Family Dollar — and hopefully they won’t close.”
I doubt they stay. It’s completely out of control. We live in the first Mad Max movie, just with the rural/urban dynamic reversed. Buy ammo, get to know your neighbors, pay attention to local elections for Sheriff and the like. The places you grew up in don’t exist anymore.
“Mayor Malik Evans”
I think I see an Urban Utopian ‘Rat pattern here...
The ELEPHANT in the room. Not a ‘white’ Elephant, I would add...
Unpunished crime has consequences for the honest citizens.
But at the same the legislating lawyers are getting rich down at the rotating door courthouse, off of the citizens too.
Rite Aid Corp.’s RAD 4.26% increase; green up pointing triangle cash reserves are dwindling, a lawsuit is looming and sales are slowing ahead of the drugstore chain’s fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday.
