MARY LOU MASTERS CONTRIBUTOR May 05, 2023 9:24 AM ET FONT SIZE:

Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy introduced a bill Friday cracking down on noncitizens’ ability to vote in federal elections.

The Protecting American Voters Act, co-sponsored by Republican Reps. Matt Rosendale of Montana, Pete Sessions of Texas and Michael Burgess of Texas, would equip state officials with the information needed to verify citizenship upon voter registration, according to the bill obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller News Foundation. The bill also requires federal agencies to provide information upon states’ request, free of fees, from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ SAVE system that confirms who is a naturalized citizen.

The legislation also enables states to check the citizenship status of those already registered to vote, allowing officials to amend current registration rolls by removing those who aren’t citizens.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is required to provide states information about registrants’ citizenship status when asked, the bill reads. The Social Security Administration (SSA) must provide information to inquiring states about citizens who were born in the U.S.

Previously, the DHS had the ability to provide such information, but only at their discretion, and the SSA was not permitted to give details for matters of election integrity, according to a press release provided with the bill. Noncitizens are banned from voting in federal elections, but some slip through the cracks. A Georgia election audit of the state’s registration rolls from 2022 indicates that 1,634 noncitizens registered to vote.

Roy previously introduced H.R. 29, the Border Safety and Security Act, to crack down on illegal immigration, requiring the DHS turn away asylum-seekers or detain them until adjudicated. The congressman wrote a letter in February to his fellow GOP members, asking them to consider and back his legislation.

The Biden administration has seen a surge in illegal immigration. In fiscal year 2022, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered over 2.3 million migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border and more than 1 million from October 2022 to February 2023.

The Trump-era Title 42, implemented to expel illegal migrants, will expire on May 11, leaving many wondering how the U.S. will cope with an expected influx of migrants. The House GOP introduced legislation Tuesday to address the concerns, calling for construction of a border wall, additional border personnel and asylum reform

The fact that we constantly have to fight tooth and nail over such a basic, fundamental concept is proof positive that the liberals/“progressives”/leftists are not American in any way and are engaged in a decades-long effort to steal our constitutional republic from us and replace it with a mobocracy. If they steal 2024, I see no peaceful way to save our country.

Suggest the legislator check what it takes to get a voter registration and I think he will find that identification required establishes citizenship as part of process. In my state, Nevada, if you have a regular driver’s license or ID you have established your citizenship.

Meanwhile, the republican front runner for President is being dragged through the courts in blue shithole America. I think that needs to be the priority right now. If this is allowed to derail our candidate what difference does ANYTHING ELSE make?

THE BULK OF THE CONFUSION is traceable to THE MOTOR VOTER LAWS.

Make motor voter laws illegal. Ray Briem called it “auto fraudo” which is exactly what it is.

Some states give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens nowadays. So just having a driver’s license is not an indication of citizenship.

If Nevada does not give driver’s license to illegals then that is a good thing.

in california you just have to make a statement that you are a citizen..lovely huh?..........no id or social security number needed...

I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the State of California that: *
I am a U.S. citizen and a resident of California and at least 18 years old.
I am not currently serving a state or federal prison term for the conviction of a felony.
I am not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court.
I understand that it is a crime to intentionally provide incorrect information on this form.
The information on this form is true and correct.

Democrats should be discouraging illegals from voting illegally, not encouraging them to break the law.

Digital ID will most likely be the ordo ab chao.
The solution to the open border problem which TBEY created.
They’ve wanted it for years under the name “RealID”, but put that on hold for a while. Maybe because they saw a more powerful surveillance tool upcoming in digital ID?

It seems it’s always the same Hegelian dialectic manipulation scheme.

And the cbdc will be the “solution” to the coming financial collapse.

...it’s so obvious that it’s almost nauseating

I’m on the same train of thought as you. It seems that nothing is done in DC for the good of the country - the dems are more interested in fighting the Republicans and the Republicans are more interested in fighting the dems..Common sense would tell anyone with a conscience that if it hurts the country - VOTE IT DOWN. If it HELPS the country - vote for it and get it through to a presidential signature.

There are more power plays in DC than anything else. The name of the game is POWER - get it and KEEP IT!

I see no peaceful way to save our country.

Article V , Convention of States (COS). Our Founders knew power would tend to grow and centralize into the District of Corruption. That is why they insisted on putting this Article into the Constitution. Check out how many times Amendments have been added by Congress with the phrase 'Congress Shall Have the Power...' .

That it has never been used in over two centuries has actually made it an even more powerful cure. The enemy will be unprepared for it. The only thing preventing its use is fear. Both sides actually believe the other side will get the upper hand for a power Congress has already had all this time.

They’ll care if Fed Funds are withheld if they don’t cut the crap. The exodus out of CA of the last few years will be dwarfed by the exodus when no fed money is flowing into CA.

Sounds like this presumes the state agencies want to weed out the illegals.
