President Biden and Vice President Harris took a quick jaunt to Northeast Washington to pick up tacos for Cinco de Mayo on Friday.

Their surprise and unplanned trip outside of the White House was to Taqueria Habanero, a Mexican restaurant in the Bryant Street shopping mall.

The president ordered a chicken quesadilla, churros and an assortment of tacos for White House staff, according to the White House.

I have never understood why we even condone celebrating this Holiday, it’s a Mexican holiday.

Evidently it is a Mexican Holiday, just nothing to do with the U.S.

“Cinco de Mayo (pronounced [ˈsiŋko ðe ˈmaʝo] in Mexico, Spanish for “Fifth of May”) is a yearly celebration held on May 5 to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. The victory over the French army was a morale boost for the Mexicans.”

In this country, it's really just an excuse to go out and get loaded.....similar to St. Patrick's Day.

It’s a regional celebration. “The day is celebrated in the state of Puebla with parades, speeches, and reenactments of the 1862 battle, though it is not much noticed in most of the rest of the country. In the mid-20th-century United States, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo became among Mexican immigrants a way of encouraging pride in their Mexican heritage. Critics observed that enthusiasm for the holiday celebration did not take off with a broader demographic until it was explicitly linked with the promotion of Mexican alcoholic beverages and that many U.S. festivities tended to both perpetuate negative stereotypes of Mexicans and promote excessive drinking.” Encyclopedia Britannica

Maybe this is why he did not do his self-announced press conference this afternoon - the aftereffects of the DC Tacos. WH sheets will be ruined (again) without Dr. Jill there to change out the diapers before his 7 pm bedtime.

Why is there a celebration of defeating the french army? That would be as challenging as the US military going to war against the Quebec volleyball team

It isn’t even a holiday in Mexico.... it was a battle that the Mexicans won... then lost.... badly. September 16 is the anniversary of the Grito de Dolores....

“Evidently it is a Mexican Holiday, just nothing to do with the U.S.”

It’s not a Mexican holiday.

Celebrating “Cinco de Mayo” was purely an American phenomenon, dreamt up by a couple of American beer companies looking for a way to gin up sales among the growing latino population in California.

Mexicans used to give you a blank look if you mentioned Cinco de Mayo since it had no significance back home.

Again, it is celebrated in the state of Puebla. Please note, many of the Mexican immigrants (illegal and legal) in the US are from the state of Puebla.

“Why is there a celebration of defeating the french army?”

France was the world’s dominant military power for a 300 year span beginning in the early 1500s. That only ended with Napolean’s defeat after France nearly conquered all of Europe including Russia.

You apparently don’t live in California.

It is not. No one in mexico knows that the hell it is. only 'american' mexicans even have a clue about this made-up "holiday".
