Pornhub Blocks All of Utah From Its Site
Vice ^ | Samantha Cole

Posted on 05/02/2023 7:58:09 AM PDT by BlackAdderess

In response to a new law that requires porn sites to verify users’ ages, Pornhub has completely disabled its websites for people located in Utah.

As of today, anyone accessing Pornhub from a Utah-based IP address doesn’t see the Pornhub homepage, but instead is met with a video of Cherie DeVille, adult performer and member of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, explaining that they won’t be able to visit the site.

I have no doubt that we block a lot of really horrible stuff already in other domains, beheading videos for example. The dark web exists, but illegal sites do get shut down.

If you want to know what I think, it is that porn sites have zero concern for what their product is doing to our society and our future, just so long as they can screw up enough kids to ensure a steady flow of our nation’s kids into their meatgrinder.

Mentioning a “free market” when supporting ever more regulations that impact private businesses and private citizens, on private property, is remarkably ironic.

The ONLY difference between a Republican and a Democrat is the fake cause:

-—Democrats want to take away your rights and spend more to save the planet, create social justice, and to protect the children.

-—Republicans want to take away your rights and spend more for public safety, national security, and to protect the children.

Neither cares to much about personal culpability, a free market, limited government, free speech, or even a US Constitution for that matter.

They both are the same crap, where politicians want to rise to fame using other peoples money and governments powers to force people to behave a certain way.

I’m sure some folks in Utah are applauding this. That’s why politicians do these sort of things. The concept that government has no business sticking their nose into any of this in the first place is foreign to both sides. I just hope that if government at state or federal level decides to ban guns to “save our children,” or ban ATVs to save our planet, or mandate we use the correct self identified pronoun for someone (social justice), the folks supporting this don’t cry to much.

My position is that kids should not be viewing porn and that our longstanding law preventing under 18 viewing should be enforced.

We have laws. If they want to abide by those laws than the free market can govern who does and doesn’t make money on other people’s misery.

It is not just Porn... It is overreach which if allowed will soon be forced on everyone everywhere.

There are boundaries that exist for social media that social media has largely put on the honor system. The honor system hasn’t worked, obviously as you are upset about enforcing existing laws, like these boundaries are some new overreaching invasion. If Utah wants to take it off the honor system, I wish them success.

Wait, that one is not what was agreed to, and I’m not sure how they could enforce what was agreed to. OK, you have a point on this, not that I’m a fan of time wasting social media, but because we should enforce the laws we already have before making new ones.

It is a door that will soon be used for discrimination. It will spread, and some states will use it to block “Religious Porn” and other “moral” sites and platforms. Once you open that door, and give government that much authority there is no closing it.

Just like what happened with the Freedom Act. Hopefully we have learned from our mistakes concerning allowing them to take freedoms in the name of safety. What sounds like a small win for morality will in the end be a huge loss of freedoms for everyone.

That is exactly how it happened in Nazi Germany.

If a person listened to radio outside of Germany, they did it under cover and THEN, even the children turned their parent in.

Enforcing the law that bans children from viewing porn is not Nazi Germany.

Slippery slope is a fallacy, or in this case is it a phallacy?!

“Not a fan of slippery slope arguments”

I see... No worry at all if it leads to more government enslavement of the people.

Not a fan of the Constitution either it looks like...

You have no idea WTH you are talking about.

There was nearly no such thing in Germany after the NAZIs took over. Because it was all blamed on the JEWS and anything even remotely considered connected to the JEWS, as well as other ethnic peoples, were considered enemies of the state and eliminated.

YOU! YES YOU! Will turn your fellow conservatives in at the drop of a hat. YOU! YES YOU! Are not to be trusted.

It is YOUR fault and parents like you to have failed in teaching YOUR children morality. So now your nanny state government will do it for you. Except it will be of their choosing.

Just one question for you: Where do you see the limits of power for government?

Now that we live in a country where (((every single one of the first 10 Amendments))) has been abridged, what and where are the limits in government power?

This was a good idea and it is still valid today (if you want to maximize liberty and be consistent): https://quotepark.com/quotes/1944451-oliver-wendell-holmes-jr-your-right-to-swing-your-arms-ends-just-where-the/

Once you allow these abstract concepts like “national security, save the planet, save the children, public safety/health and social justice” to be an argument to limit other peoples rights even without being able to show any real damages directly caused, or to spend tax money, where are the limits?

https://www.reuters.com/article/utah-porn/utah-declares-pornography-a-public-health-hazard-idINL2N17M1B5 Really, a “public health hazard?” Is he declaring war on porn? Politicians like to declare war on things. Has he sponsored studies so that we can follow the science to how porn is a public hazard? Science always agrees with those who pay for it (climate change, marijuana, Covid, the health benefits of cigarettes...).

Where are the limits in these laws to protect ourselves from ourselves, where you’re dealing with private businesses, private citizens, in their private space and you cannot show any true damages to anyone unless you use rhetoric and even then need to stretch that to make some argument?

This is junk. Do not question the law and if it is sound when things go the other way. When they take your guns to save the children, ban your gas stove to save the planet, or teach your kids about LGBTQIA+ in grade school using public health as an argument, do not complain. If you want government with those powers, do not complain when it comes around the other way.

Personally I agree that porn isn’t good, but it’s not the governments role to be doing this.
