Ukraine says it controls key supply route into Bakhmut

Ukraine remains in control of a key supply route into Bakhmut, a military spokesperson said on Saturday, as the head of Russia's mercenary Wagner Group threatened to withdraw some of his troops from the eastern city if Moscow did not send more ammunition.

Russian forces have been trying for 10 months to punch their way into the shattered remains of what was once a city of 70,000. Kyiv has pledged to defend Bakhmut, which Russia sees as a stepping stone to attacking other cities.

"For several weeks, the Russians have been talking about seizing the 'road of life,' as well as about constant fire control over it," Serhiy Cherevatyi, a spokesperson for Ukrainian troops in the east, said in an interview with local news website Dzerkalo Tyzhnia.

"Yes, it is really difficult there ... (but) the defence forces have not allowed the Russians to 'cut off' our logistics."

The "road of life" is a vital road between the ruined Bakhmut and the nearby town Chasiv Yar to the west - a distance of just over 17 km (10.56 miles).

Ukraine's top military command said in its daily update on Sunday that its forces had repelled 58 Russian attacks over the past day along the part of frontline stretching from Bakhmut through Avdiivka and on to Maryinka further south in the Donetsk region.

(snip)

Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of Russia's Wagner Group, who has often claimed unverifiable successes, said that his forces have advanced some 100 to 150 metres (109 to 164 yards) in Bakhmut, leaving just under 3 square km of the city in Ukrainian hands.

But he said he lost 94 troops.

But I've been told repeatedly since October that "it's over" in Bakhmut.

Guess not.

It's important Russia keeps a door open to the charnel house.

I does appear that Putin thought he could walk through Ukraine, but miscalculated to a massive scale.
If he had gone for kherson and Donbas things might have been different.

What concerns me is even if Ukrainian offensive is wildly successful Russia will not quit, and this will go on for years.

Not even sure the removal of Putin will change this. The enemy we know as compared the enemy we don’t…
From what is see the Russian public or at least the higher ups are a blood thirsty lot and their mindset is something hard to comprehend

A conclusion I came to after many deployments to the Middle East and what I see as one of the biggest problems at least as far as US is concerned is that we tend to project our values on others

Example. Why when the despots that were controlling iraq, Libya and Afghanistan didn’t the people rise up and support democratic ideals….
Answer they have no history of that, but when told that people often go nah it’s something else
And when we we see Russian grandmas and mothers saying kill all Ukrainians and we can make more children to send to the front we naturally say they must be spouting propaganda. Don’t be so sure their mindsets are mostly not the same. Even those who fled Russia to avoid draft are not exactly condemning the war, they just did t want to die for it

The Ruskies have taken about 94% of Bakhmut to date. That means the Ukes have good chance at taking it back!

Russia is losing.

The Russian army is running out of ammo.

Putin is on his death bed.

Putin is going to be overthrown in a coup any day now.

Have I forgotten anything?

The people here who keep telling us Rusdian lies about the war are despicable.

The damn Russians themselves are screaming about their losses on Bachmut, and about their need to get ready for the Ukrainian offensive.

And these idiots or creeps are in here saying it’s all lies, we’re so stupid and yelling something about “homos”.

We need intelligent discussion not these childish idiots.

Russia committed to Bachmut and has suffered significant losses. This is mirrored by them making almost no gains elsewhere.

They’ve been defeated in attacks on several other small towns.

That much is clear. Maybe things will change but people thought Bachmut would fall months ago. It didn’t.

The Ukrainian fighters at Bachmut are heroes, the scumbags and “homos” are the jerks here lying about those heroes.

From what I understand, the road that runs NW out of Bakhmut has been captured by the Ruskies. The one running south of west of of the city is probably the one they are mentioning in this article.

The Ruskies always leave one road open for their adversaries to use when they retreat.

How many here honestly believe that the Ukes are going to win the Battle of Bakhmut? Any replies from any windbags of bluster will be ignored.

BTW, this map brought to you courtesy of the pro-Uke website https://liveuamap.com/.

Zeepers like laughing about Russia not fully surrounding Bakhmut. The entire point of leaving open a point of resupply and reinforcement is so Russian artillery can wipe out all they send. If they encircled the city piecemeal, that’s less men and material Russia can destroy. It’s a black hole for the ukies. They just keep feeding men and supplies to Russian guns. If Russia wanted that supply line closed, it would be closed.

A private can understand this.

But in the 2020s it’s all about the memes and narrative.

Yep, one always has to consider the reliability and leanings of the source. Reuters isn’t exactly an exemplar of objectivity IMO.

If Russias intent was to not encircle bahkmut, then why all the false bragging for the last 8 months by the agression supporters that it was surronded, encircled, has fallen, etc, etc, when that was supposedly never the objective? Does not add up.

The Ukrainians have already won in Bakhmut. Their goal was to tie up the Russian forces and keep them busy and taking casualties in one area over the winter. That goal has been achieved.

What was Russia's goal? All they have achieved at the cost of thousands of lives, and ten months of effort is to capture most of the ruins of a small, empty city. They have moved their front lines a few miles, at the price of about one Russian soldier per foot.

Your post would have some rational basis if your fellow pro-Putin posters had not been claiming for months that Russia's plan was to encircle Bakhmut and surround the Ukrainians.

Now that the encirclement failed you make up a new rationale for Russia's behavior.

Why don't you tell us why the destruction of an oil terminal in Crimea was a part of Russia's strategic plan also.

That will probably be part of your assignment from the Russian MOD next week.
