Taxation is theft.

I dont think govt seizing someones house is the answer.

Govt is already nuts with cops using asset forfeiture to steal from citizens just transporting cash from a business to a bank.

They could slap a lien on it and easily get a govt court to get the money another way.

They prepaid a few months in advance and were told that they don’t need to worry about timely payments as long as they caught up on the payments by February 2019.

Read the contract or instrument and know what you're agreeing to and what your obligations are. It's simple.

Government is full of crooks and uncaring people ostensibly there to help you.

There are a few good people, though. You usually have to call and tell your entire story ten times to ten different people over five weeks before finding one of those gems who will take a few minutes to understand what you need and figure out how to unravel the tape and get it done.

re. continuing to charge retirees the same amount as they transition to a fixed income

My county in Texas has an "Over 65" provision in the property taxes, which freezes the tax from that point forward. If your home value or a tax rate decreases your taxes may go down, but they cannot increase.

In Texas one can also get a tax lien loan to pay off property taxes.

I wonder if this family in Michigan had the same opportunity?

Homeownership is not for everyone. Too many responsibilities, such as taxes, insurance, repairs and so on.

I would argue these people would have been better off renting, but they still would probably have been kicked out for their inability to pay the rent.

Speaking of NYS...

Someone really ought to take a good hard look at what’s going on with tax foreclosures and land banks.

Hint, hint...

Most seniors downsize anyway…….sell the bigger homes.

Bingo. If you're having a problem paying the mortgage and/or property taxes, then it's time to put the home on the market and sell it. Downsize.

One of my sisters called me moaning about having problems paying her mortgage, asking me to buy her home. What? I thought she had a low mortgage, but she kept getting equity loans to spend on frills and ended up paying 4 times as much as the initial mortgage when they bought. Told her to sell it immediately, or lose it all. She didn't want to sell at what buyers offered, and it sat for almost a year while she and her husband struggled to pay the mortgage, finally selling it below what was offered before. They lost everything and went into bankruptcy, living in a small apartment.

Stupid! Yet some people are that stupid!

I’ve always been against property taxes. It means you never own your property. It’s that simple. Why no politician ever talks about or suggests a change to the tax code is a mystery to me.

Downsizing to a more affordable place (tax wise) in CA means about moving into a garage.

Maine has this.

LePage tried to change this grossly unfair practice. He said the pushback from the towns and counties wad unbelievable

Then they should move.

The taxes were there when they bought the home…they still bought it.

Something very bad is going on all over Upstate.

Insanely high reassessments given out in municpalities and towns.

Something very hinky is going on.
