BBC News China has distanced itself from the remarks of one of its envoys who questioned the sovereignty of Ukraine and other former Soviet countries.
Paris ambassador Lu Shaye's comments last week caused widespread outrage, leading on calls to Beijing to clarify.
On Monday, China's foreign ministry said it respected the independence of all post-Soviet republics.

Well, he is correct.
Every country in Europe has legitimate claims to other countries in Europe, either by demographics or history or geography.
And all have been resolved by treaties.
The Ukraine was just created by a whim and none of these issues were resolved.
Yes, this is a tight spot for the CCP: if they deny the independence of the Post-Soviet Republics, then they will cut themselves off from all of Western Civilization as almost all of Western Civilization (including Africa and Latin America) become independent due to voter demands and armed movements.
If they accept the statehood of those republics’ voter referendums, they will have to likewise accept a voter referendum taken by the citizens of Taiwan and maybe even Hong Kong….
I do not believe this is over, yet.
Ambassador Lu is just being honest about Beijing’s actual view of the world.
I beg to differ. Treaties are only needed when wars are fought. Many nations (e.g. Panama) came into being simply because some global power decided to accept (and possibly rig) a voter referendum.
In the case of Panama, the US wanted a canal, but the Colombian government would not allow it. Hence, we started a revolutionary movement, quickly granted recognition, signed a treaty with our installed puppet government, and built the canal anyway.
I don’t think this is over yet either!
China recognized Ukraine too in that
Panama was a war (revolution) and then a treaty.
Or perhaps Beijing is playing on Putin’s vices to gain an advantage.
Who started the war? The Panamanians or the US agents sent to advise the Panamanians?
The US has many black eyes in the realm of Foreign Relations.
America 100% started it to build the canal.
Like so many other conflicts to include Ukraine.
Yes, and the “revolution” lasted what? 3 days?
Some “revolution”.
Truth is that Panama was created more by fiat than was Ukraine.
Yet, I dare say, we would send troops more quickly and eagerly to defend Panama. Why? Because our national interests are there … just like they are with Taiwan.
American force + threat of force + threat of a coup or a real coup against the local government = America gets its way.
Repeated over and over in the last 100 years.
And you make excuses for it.
Neither excuses nor condemnation of US foreign policy. Just trying to point out the silliness of arguing that Ukraine is somehow not a legitimate country.
We recognize it; China officially recognizes it; Russia even officially recognizes it; therefore it is.
The problem here is that Russia is trying to do to Ukraine effectively what we did with Panama and China desperately wants to prevent with respect to Taiwan.
Hence, my initial assertion that China has to tread lightly here.
I just received a history of the world in maps. Interestingly enough ukr doesn’t appear on any maps as independent country until early 1990’s. In slavic languages the ukraine means “the borderlands”. I was surprised at how large poland-lithuania used to be. Maybe the russkies could offer the western half of ukr to poland if they leave nato.
Ukraine was not created by a whim. It has had a United nations seat since 1945.
What whims are you obviating?
You do realise that the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was a common wealth. It was multicultural, multilingual and multi religious
