Ohio Senate candidate proposes reparations for white descendants of Union Civil War soldiers

Ohio GOP Senate candidate Bernie Moreno proposed at a campaign event this week that white descendants of Northern Civil War soldiers be eligible for reparations.

"We stand at the shoulders of giants, don't we? We stand on shoulders of people like John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington. That this group of people took on the largest empire in history. They said no, we will not stand for this. And won," Moreno said earlier this week, according to the New York Post.

"That same group of people later, white people, died to free black people," he continued. "It's never happened in human history before, but it happened here in America. That's not taught a lot in schools much, is it?”

I have at least one of those in my family.

Very probably a few of them.

American slave owners never received reparations for their property loss unlike the British slave owners that did. Just saying...

I had six ancestors that fought in the Civil War. Five for the South and one for the North. The only slaveowner in the bunch fought for the Union and didn't have to give them up until December of 1965.

My dog wants reparations for the domestication of the wolf that left them marginalized and dependent upon monkeys.

I have one great uncle and one great-great uncle who were KIA. The first was mortally wounded and then taken prisoner.

There were thousands of black slave owners. Why should we pay reparations to descendants of black slave owners?

Just how far back in the hills did your family live?

“If we are going to pay reparations, let’s also pay the descendants of Civil War soldiers who gave their lives to free slaves.”

What?

Why did Union soldiers have to fight and die to “free slaves.”

The United States Constitution was pro-slavery - Lincoln took an oath to protect and defend it twice - but that could be changed peacefully by the constitutional amendment process; in other words, the ballot box.

Why didn’t the Union vote to abolish slavery in 1861 - or 1848 for that matter?

Do you know why?

Black people are super grateful for the White man’s Civil War sacrifice. They prove it every day by being such dutiful and productive citizens.

My family never owned a slave. They did, however, have their property seized and ripped apart while their rights were repeatedly violated by an occupying army during Reconstruction.

The Union soldiers got paid, maybe not enough but the got paid.

If anyone is owed reparations, its the slave owners from the slave states that didn’t secede. Their “property” were taken by the Federal government without just compensation.

You can argue slaves from the confederacy were contraband and rightly seized. But the loyal slave states, no.

Not that I’d hold my breathe on anyone getting reparations of any sort

“American slave owners never received reparations for their property loss unlike the British slave owners that did. Just saying...”

Not real familiar with British reparations but I but it was only given to loyal British subjects and not those in rebellion.

It was in 1837. American slave owners could have received the same from their government but didn’t.

That can be rectified for their descendants though.
