When Republican donors arrived at the Four Seasons in Nashville last weekend, they were handed a polling memo written by former Trump aide Kellyanne Conway with a startling statistic: Eighty percent of voters disagreed with the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v.Jackson last year overturning Roe v. Wade.
Among Republican strategists and candidates looking to the 2024 presidential primaries, abortion has become the trickiest political issue and a divisive one internally for the party, according to GOP officials, campaign strategists, donors and others involved.
The ruling last summer encapsulated a 50-year push by Republicans to overturn Roe and was viewed initially by many Republican politicians and activists as a seismic policy and cultural win. Conservative lawyers cheered what they long viewed as a bad ruling in Roe, and Republican politicians issued hundreds of statements praising the court. But in the aftermath, it has become a political headache.

In recent weeks, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a bill behind closed doors to ban abortions after six weeks, when many women don’t know they are pregnant. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has privately circulated polling to candidates that shows the American public broadly supports a 15-week ban — and she has privately expressed concerns about a six-week ban.
Former president Donald Trump has barely spoken about the issue, telling advisers that he believes it is a difficult one for Republicans and not something he should focus his time on. His campaign did not directly answer whether Trump agreed with the six-week ban in Florida or what policies he would support nationally but instead said Trump believes the issue should be left up to individual states. “States’ rights,” Trump has said privately when advisers have floated the issue, adding his assessment that they should not talk about it.

So what say the wise people of the forum?
Why? It’s a states rights matter now. It’s not a federal matter.
I’m more concerned with Kelly Ann Conway handing out polling data about 80% of Americans disagreeing with the Hobbs decision. WTF??!!? You’re obviously more concerned that Freepers still overwhelmingly support Trump instead of RDS. 🤣
I think that the Left should cry harder about it. If it’s that big of a deal to the electorate, then it’s in their hands as it should be. “Democracy” and all that stuff...
Washington Post Satanists say so.
So what say the wise people of the forum?

We say never trust disinformation garbage from the Compost.
Trump is not ideological conservative, he will compromise on abortion, LGBTQ+, Bud, etc.
Yup. In 1973, a handful of old guys in black robes decided Roe v Wade on the basis of nothing more than their own personal opinions.
Nowadays, the communists running this country like to speak of “our democracy”. And they are livid at the thought that actual voters in each of the 50 states can make local decisions on this matter so that something closer to the people’s will can decide this important matter. The Democrats just hate it when peasants have a say in things.
I don’t think there is any going back. It should never have been a federal matter. And now it isn’t.
Ok, so we aren’t going to nuance our polling?
How many support killing an infant brought to full term?
Cause when the democrats say “women’s right choose” they mean infanticide.
But let’s keep fighting this battle on the enemies terms.
Abortion sent back to the states. Too bad El Rushbo isn’t around to explain it to folks.
We got the Constitutional Decision in the Dobbs case.
It was a good sound decision.
It offered Americans the chance to live and let live depending on which state they live in to have the abortion laws of their choosing.
But the Left reacted quickly and stole the narrative in the media as usual with the Republicans playing a ‘deer in the headlight’ role.
The Left wants to impose abortion on the states.
The Left wants to impose abortion on the states and deny their right to choose their own abortion laws.
Can we get that message coming out of our mouths.
We cannot allow the Democrats and the Left to impose Abortion on the sovereign states it’s a Tenth Amendment matter.
Amen.
So, you’re OK with some states prohibiting abortion while others permit it? The compromise position?
Some Freepers take the position, that this is a state’s rights issue, and render no opinion on abortion itself.
Some Freepers say that laws such as the one signed by DeSantis, are actually too liberal, because they allow the abortion before six weeks, and they take the position that life begins at conception.
Some Freepers say that the political landscape around abortion means that we should not push for stricter bans on abortion.
Other Freepers say to hell with politics, ban all abortion, no exceptions, and no thinking of political consequences from doing so. Those Freepers do not think it’s a state’s rights issue, they want a federal ban on abortion.
Trump was defending the groomers at Disney. After harping on Desantis to play politics on his criminal case, trump the. Turned himself in.
He has a presidential record of lockdowns, glbig pharma billions, bumpstock ban, unvetted Syrians.. he is calling for more big gov by paying people to have children so he won’t have to take a stand on social security.
Do you really think he is only talking about taxpayer citizens. This will include people who never pay federal income tax.
He will ensure working class has more corporate cronies to pay.
Fauci n birx led trump by his v@gina.
According to the logic for voting against this bill, an infant breathing air on its own outside the womb is not a person. Medical personnel are not only not derelict in failing to provide care, but instead must kill the baby.
Now read the bill and to see if that is not a reasonable interpretation. So, why the dilemma about deciding about abortion?
In terms of the Supreme Court decision, all they said was politicians could no longer avoid the responsibility to deal with the issue.
The problem is Democrats are evil and Republicans are craven.

please educate me. How does criticism of Trump on a host of issues, relate to the topic of this thread?
“The problem is Democrats are evil and Republicans are craven.”
Very much true, and probably too kind to both of them.
But Americans are far too propagandized by the media and too stupid to think critically and for themselves to know that — both Republicans and Democrats
