NATO Agrees Ukraine Will Become a Member
Newsweek ^ | April 21, 2023 | Isabel van Brugen

All NATO members have agreed that Ukraine will eventually join the military alliance, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Friday.

Stoltenberg's statement to reporters came ahead of the 11th meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Group at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. However, Stoltenberg fell short of offering a timeline on when Ukraine could become a member of NATO and said the main focus now is to ensure the country prevails in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In September 2022, Ukraine announced a bid for fast-track membership of NATO after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had annexed four Ukrainian regions partially controlled by Russia. Should Ukraine become a member of the military alliance, NATO would be obligated to take action to defend it against Russia in the ongoing war.

> The entirety of Russia’s western border will now be guarded by a rearmed and reenergized NATO.

Yeah, but NATO tanks and planes can only be operated during daylight with clear weather due to the member nations "zero carbon" commitment.

Remember, NATO member states consider "climate change" as the most important existential threat and it's top priority.

Understand the propaganda pamplet says NATO is defensive, but I disagree. For instance, there was nothing defensive about NATO bombing Serbia in 1999, or NATO bombing Lybia in 2011. U.S. should declare mission accomplished and leave NATO.

AGREE, Notice in the statement from NATO, there is NO TIMELINE given.

Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks, Months, Years, Decades, Centuries, Millenia ??????

NATO statement carries about the same weight as - ALL scientists believe the Sun will eventually burn out!!!

It is past time to leave NATO. They have abrogated their duties and now they want to bring in a dictatorship.

rlmorel: "Yes. Interlocking treaties and alliances that dragged everyone in.
Millions died horribly.
It has been sixty years since “The Guns of August” was written, but even people who would speak out against this appear to be ignorant of it."

I read "The Guns of August" and I know something others didn't notice, namely, that Barbara Tuchman totally skipped over events of July 1914, where the German high command pushed Austrians into issuing an ultimatum to Serbia, the ultimatum intended by German High Command to be unacceptable to Serbia and so to start a major war in which Germany would begin by invading Belgium and France.

In short, WWI was no "accident" or unintended.
It was exactly what the German High Command wanted, and which Kaiser Wilhelm reluctantly went along with.

Like Vlad the Invader today, Germans in 1914 were empire builders who recognized the growing economic and military strength of their primary opponents -- Russia & France -- and believed that war was necessary in 1914 because, if they waited any longer, Russia & France would soon grow too powerful to defeat.

Because of the manifest danger of German Empire building, Russia and France were forced to ally against Germany.
Had they not allied, German victory in the First World War is a certainty.

So be careful what you wish for.

Russia’s population collapse will continue leaving the only possible future for them as a vasal state of China.

Or a NATO member.

If you can't beat 'em...

This is on the same level as the USSR putting missiles in Cuba - extremely provocative.

The Soviet Union viewed their Cuban missiles as a reasonable response to our Turkish missiles.

Bobalu: "The Guns of August documentary"

Barbara Tuchman believed WWI was accidental and unnecessary.
Later research by German scholars into German High Command records show Tuchman had it all wrong.
The truth is the German High Command in 1914 did want war, and not a small war, but a major war which would begin with German invasions of Belgium & the Netherlands -- their Schlieffen Plan.
German High Command motives were simple -- Russia and France were growing economically and militarily so fast that if there was no war in 1914, Germany would not be victorious in a future war.

That's why the German High Command pushed Austrians into issuing an ultimatum to Serbia and then invading.
They also refused to let Kaiser Wilhelm order a last-minute stand-down of mobilizing German armies.

My point is, war in 1914 was no accident, but rather was intended by Germany and totally necessary for the allies.
Today, it would also be necessary against Russia if Vlad the Invader becomes as unhinged as some suggest he could.

Yes. Many decades ago I took a political science course as an elective. The professor presented many 20th century events from “the other guy’s” point of view. It was a good course, very interesting. He mentioned what you mentioned there.

Another thing he discussed was the 1938 Munich conference, which gave away the Sudetenland to Germany. The USSR was not invited to that conference (it should have been), and that made Stalin think the West was conspiring against him. That did much to lead Stalin to an alliance with Hitler in 1939.

By the way, this professor was a stanch, no-nonsense anti-communist. Probably none of them left in American universities today.

"Forgive me Lord for how much I loathe Ukraine and that short little thief Zelensky. Spit."

You can be forgiven for insanity, but not for irrational hatreds.

It might help you to know that, statistically, Ukrainians are twice as religious as Russians and only half as corrupt.
By no measure do they deserve the unprovoked assaults by Vlad the Invader's orcs.

As for Zelenskyy, there's no evidence he ever stole anything.
So, what, exactly, is that craziness rattling around inside your brain, FRiend?

Sirius Lee: "Correct. No reason for bloody Vlad to be satisfied with taking just the Eastern portion.
Now he’ll go for the whole enchilada."

Did you forget already?
In February 2022 Vlad the Invader went for the "whole enchilada", and got his *ss kicked out of Kiev, Kharkiv and Kherson.
Since then he's been dicking around for, what, now eight months? Trying to overrun Bakhmut.

Of course, now everyone is feverishly preparing for their "spring offensive" and nobody knows what that might be.
But based on Russian performance to date, very few are overestimating them, or underestimating Ukraine.

Given that, I would expect Ukraine to be significantly smaller than it already is after this war is over.
