Pace of rise in global sea level has doubled -UN climate report

GENEVA (Reuters) - Global sea levels are rising at more than double the pace they did in the first decade of measurements in 1993-2002 and touched a new record high last year, the World Meteorological Organization said on Friday.

Extreme glacier melt and record ocean heat levels - which cause water to expand - contributed to an average rise in sea levels of 4.62mm a year between 2013-2022, the U.N. agency said in a major report detailing the havoc of climate change. That is about double the pace of the first decade on record, 1993-2002, leading to a total increase of over 10 cm since the early 1990s.

Rising sea levels threaten some coastal cities and the very existence of low-lying states such as the island of Tuvalu - which plans to build a digital version of itself in case it is submerged.

"This report shows that, once again, greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere continue to reach record levels – contributing to warming of the land and ocean, melting of ice sheets and glaciers, rising sea levels, and warming and acidifying of oceans," WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a foreword.

This sounds bad, we need to immediately Red Tag and Declare ALL properties within 1 mile of the coast or less than 50 feet above MSL Uninhabitable and Extremely Dangerous to Human Life. Raze all structures and BILL the property Owners for the clean up, we need to SAVE these people from the ravages of man made global warming.

I wasted 5 minutes to do the math and it works out as follows:
1.637in over the 9 yr period which translates to over 1.5ft over the next hundred years ‘IF’ the rate is real & continues unchanged over that time.
FWIW

Visitors today marvel at how enterprising and brave pacific mariners were 10,000 years ago when they settled all of the pacific islands. It’s true. They were. However, the earth was emerging from an ice age 10,000 years ago. The ocean level was a lot lower then. There were LOTS more islands, and the distances between them were far shorter than distances between Pacific islands today.

The cause of rising sea level is not climate change but rather continental drift

Well, where the proof that that statement is wrong?

Have you seen the "Hole In The Ocean" articles during the last week?

The hole was accidentally discovered about 10 years ago when an ocean science vessel was idling off the coast of Oregon waiting for a storm to pass.

They were directly above the subduction zone where the Pacific and North American plates pass over and under each other. They detected a plume of bubbles on the sea floor, deployed a robot to investigate, and discovered that fresh water was pouring up through the hole with the velocity of a fire hose.

Subsequent investigations have concluded that the water is coming from the actual slip zone where the two plates pass, and where the temperature is 300-500 degrees F.

They measured the temp of the out flowing fresh water at 16 degrees F higher than the ambient sea water.

This hole is claimed to be one of a kind, but there is no way to confirm that - there could be thousands of holes like this spread around the globe, or thousands of acres of super heated sea floor. Combine the heat source of those holes, hydro thermal vents, sea floor spreading, and normal ocean volcanic activity, and you have measurable heating of the ocean coming straight from the Earth's mantle.

FTA: '...ocean heat levels - which cause water to expand -"

I suspect author and/or the UN is illiterate. Water expands when frozen, making this theory complete bullshiite.

So, from 2013 to 2022 the sea level rise 32mm?

Yes, but it's DOUBLE!!!!! WE ARE DOOMED!

CO2 is diluted in the ocean. More water, more co2 being absorbed. Self balancing system

4.62mm in 9 years. Round it off to 10 years to make the math easy.

4.62 x 10=46.2mm.

I believe that is 1.8”

So in 100 years, at the same rate, the seas would be 18’ higher?

And we are going to panic over that when we have no idea what the climate will be over that 100 year period?

Yes, it’s not only the millions of volcanic outlets into the ocean heating it, but the thinness of deep ocean crust means that the earth is constantly heating and degassing CO2 into the ocean itself, and that heat and CO2 eventually reaches the surface through dissipation. Of course, this is completely ignored by climatologist even though it’s obvious that it’s a substantial influence on ocean warmth and thus climate.

Dan Pena, the “screaming billionaire”, harps on this. No bank, no investor would have any part of all the oceanfront properties they’re constantly building if they believed in rising levels. They don’t.
