5 Reasons Why GOP-Controlled State Legislatures Don’t Pass More Conservative Policies

1. Moderate Republican Lawmakers

Despite socially conservative religious groups rallying their supporters to elect them, some Republican lawmakers at the state and local levels describe themselves as fiscally conservative and socially liberal. In states like Wyoming, a Republican-dominated state, one analysis from Evidence-Based Wyoming found that around 31 state legislators considered themselves “very liberal,” with all but two having the Republican label behind their name, placing 29 Republicans further to the left of several Democrat state lawmakers. Some of the reasons for many Republican state officials’ moderate stances on issues like abortion, LGBTQ issues, school choice, and the Second Amendment include outside influence from different organizations or corporations, friendship with other Democrat lawmakers, cultural influences from celebrities, and more. Many of these lawmakers believe that by passing free-market conservative or libertarian economic policies and being moderate on social issues, they can appease both sides, despite being supported by conservative voters and organizations.

2. Lobbying Efforts by Outside Groups

Another significant reason Republican politicians in Red States do not pass more conservative legislation despite control of all houses and the governorship involves outside political lobbying groups and their campaign to influence lawmakers. In early January, the National Review found that the reason South Dakota, the third conservative state in America, did not pass a law that would protect women’s support against men who identified as men was because of the Sanford Research Center, a left-wing healthcare organization, mobilizing behind the scenes to help kill the bill.

3. Bipartisan for the Sake of Bipartisanship

4. Lack of Pressure from Voting Constituents

5. Tight Majorities in Some State Legislatures

They're liberal Democrats that run as Republicans because otherwise, they wouldn't get elected.

That's why we call them RINO's.

Conservatives in general look to limited government and representative government as their touchstones. Neither lend themselves to massive socialist transformations and agenda. Leftists look to centralizing power and refining the overall will of the people and to achieve such they look to unlimited government to manage all outcomes in society.

They are by nature totalitarians.

I think the biggest reason is that in red states if you want the job of politician, you run as a Republican so you get hired. Red state legislatures are utterly full of people who truly are Democrats in their heart, they just simply want to live where they do, and have the job title politician.

Yes. Too many politicians use the GOP as a vehicle for election but have no commitment to any sort of coherent values or principles, and no concept of party loyalty. IOW untrustworthy and pretty much useless.

I would add the people that keep voting for them are the same.
Unfortunately states are pure democracies meaning mob rule.
That is why presidential elections use the EC.
If we could get the senate away from the ridiculous popular vote we could get somewhere.
But we are constantly told we must support whatever progressive republican gets the nom.
This is what happens when you do that
TN is now purple and Bill Lee, Trumps TN Covid Tsar is working on making it blue.
As far as I am concerned, if you supported long lockdowns or actively gave billions to big pharma cartel, you will never receive my vote regardless of what party initial you have.
Records matter and COVID destroyed many freedoms we will never regain, under a republican prez whom fauci n birx led by his v@gina.

Far too many Republican voters are lazy and do not want to ask their political leaders tough questions.

We currently have 26 GOP Governors and I keep hearing people say: “We really like FL Governor DeSantis”.

And I reply: “Why aren’t you challenging your own GOP Governor to act like DeSantis so I can say I like your GOP Governor???????”

The real reason?

MONEY.

They like money and the power it derives. Hurting any group that gives them money is bad for “business”.

#4 should be #1.

4. Lack of Pressure from Voting Constituents

This is what it looks like. I have not seen this in years. The greatest error of our conservative generation is the lack of protest.

"describe themselves as fiscally conservative and socially liberal"

Now how would a fiscal conservative be able to fund a liberal agenda?

Democrats are evil and Republicans are cowards,
