CHICAGO — The mother of an 8-year-old boy who took her gun to school and accidentally fired it in a classroom last year has been sentenced to 24 months of probation. Tatanina Kelly, 29, received the sentence after pleading guilty to child endangerment before Judge Megan Goldish, according to court records.
Last May, officials said that Kelly’s son took a 9-millimeter Glock from under her bed and took it to class at Walt Disney Magnet School, 4130 North Marine Drive. The gun fired as the boy showed it to a classmate, and a bullet ricocheted off the floor, causing graze wounds to a 7-year-old boy’s stomach area and upper lip, according to a CPD report documenting the incident.
Prosecutors said Kelly is licensed to own firearms.

Wow, Chicago, and no metal detectors at the doors...
OOOOOooooOOo! “24 months probation!” That’ll teach her. ROTFL. Probation is the biggest joke anyone ever came up with. It’s also the most violated program the idiots ever came up with.
“Prosecutors said Kelly is licensed to own firearms.”
How magnanimous of them to allow people to have rights they already have
IF it had been a white, heterosexual, Christian male, it would have been at least four separate life sentences: one for being white, one for not being queer, one for being Christian and one for being male.....just sayin’.
Great justice system we had here, be ashamed IF someone came in and destroyed it....thanks commie RATs.
[shrug] school shootings are no big deal.
I read and re-read that sentence and thought it was the mother who took the gun to school and AD it.
Only later in the story does it clarify that the boy stole the gun from her.
This is the sort of crap that leads to "safe storage laws." The laws don't make storage any safer, but give prosecutors something to charge the gun owner with after the fact.
Is an “accidental discharger” inside a school classroom still considered “an active shooter” since pulling the trigger inside a classroom was only “accidental”? Askin’ for a friend.
“Prosecutors said Kelly is licensed to own firearms.”
As Clouseau would say, “Not anymore”
“The mother of an 8-year-old boy who took her gun to school “
You are correct! I usually catch these, but missed this. Thanks for pointing it out.
Urinalists!
Askin’ for a friend.

A friend asked me and I told him
I didn’t know the answer.
“Safe storage rules” are a criminals best friend.
Watched a video from a home security camera on Newsmax where three thugs broke through the front door of a home, the 3 ran in, quickly looked around, one went into the bedroom, and you could hear gunshots, and the thug came running out of the room and out the front door with the other two following in panic
Had the homeowner been forced to keep his gun unloaded, in a separate secured gun case from his ammo, and had to,have a trigger lock, he and his wife would have been dead. He would not have had time to unlock every case, and trigger lock, fill his gun with ammo, just to defend himself.
Any state that requires “safe, storage” of guns does, not care about law abiding citizens and thir need to defend themselves.
“...pleading guilty to child endangerment”
Of course having a boy take his mom’s pistol to show off to his friends at school is yet another problem.
I lived in Oakland, CA in the 80s.
The phenomenon of children taking guns to school in backpacks, resulting in accidental discharges, as well as targeted shootings were a common occurrence.
There were at that time no calls for “gun control,” and any suggestion at school board meetings that parents should be held responsible for their children or their guns, was met with howls of derision.
At that same time, the drug wars between the Bloods and the Crips were raging in East Oakland. Alarming numbers of teenagers were murdering one another in drive-bys for control of “turf” and the right to get rich quick by selling crack cocaine.
The children bringing guns to school were from the same homes, the same environment, that venerated the Bloods & Crips as “heroes.”
The incidents & accompanying climate of fear barely rated a blip on on the media’s radar.
The difference? The so-called school shootings, as well as drive-by terrorism, were being perpetrated by black children in majority black schools and neighborhoods, long before Columbine brought the issue of “gun violence” to the suburbs.
So much for some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country. Chicago better pass some more gun control laws that they can ignore.
“safe storage laws” = suicide pact
Yup- that fella and his wife woudl be dead today if he hadn’t had his gun near him and available and ready to go
Also- The same night i saw the home camera video- newsmax showed another video of a cop who shot a knife swinging criminal 11 times, nearly point blank range, and the perp kept coming and swinging the knife- 11 times with what was probably a 9mm- and he even walked off away from the cop after he decided he wasn’t able to get to the cop- (im sure he died after a few hundred feet- but still- even 11 shots didn’t stop the attack)
Biden and ilk claiming we don’t need magazines that hold numerous bullets is nonsense- The dude that was asleep had 3 thugs in his home- armed- had he been restricted to 7 shots, he could not have defended himself if all three decided to try to kill him and his wife-
There’s something to be said regarding training and shot placement.
Wow, Chicago, and no metal detectors at the doors...Actually ...
High school student circumvented metal detectors to bring gun into class Tuesday, prosecutors say
A child prodigy.
No such think as an “accidental” discharge. This was a negligent discharge by a minor who broke state law by possessing a firearm and transporting it illegally on to school property. Thank God no one was killed.
