Boston weighs banning tiny bottles of alcohol

Buying “nips” in Boston may soon be nipped in the bud.

The city of Boston is considering a possible ban on miniature liquor bottles, known to Bostonians as “nips” and to others across the country as “minis” or “shooters,” due to the amount of waste they add to the city.

Boston City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo on Monday proposed banning city liquor stores from selling the mini bottles, which hold between 1.7 to 3.4 fluid ounces, in order to combat both alcohol abuse and mounting waste in city streets.

“The fact that this handled even one of these two issues would have been enough for me,” Arroyo said during a city hall hearing on the issue on Monday.

“The fact that it plays in both of these issues I think is an overwhelming reason to move forward with something like this.”

“Banned in Boston”. The MA Puritans have a history and are still at it.

What if someone promises to drink it through an eco-friendly paper straw?

I remember when printers put “Banned In Boston” on the covers of their books even when they hadn’t been banned. It increased sales by orders of magnitude.

The alcohol is not the problem.

The lack of a house, apartment, or other dwelling is not the problem.

The gun is not the problem.

The human condition IS the problem.

This reminds me of back in the day liquor stores where I am could actually serve you a mixed drink through the drive thru window.

When the city cracked down with a new ordinance banning it the liquor stores just changed to selling “setups” thst consisted of a small bag of ice, cups, mixers and the liquor......then what you had was a driver on the road trying to MIX a drink while driving......not to mention they may have already a few.

People will get their booze one way or another.

“to combat both alcohol abuse “

So a drunk is going to drink less because all he can get now are large bottles?

Excellent logic.

I heard of alcoholics who buy 2 small bottles daily to keep themselves in check.
If they have a big bottle they know they will finish it.
So this measure will not help alcoholics at all.

I don’t see how they, one jurisdiction, bans these small bottles. These tiny bottles do show us how big the drinking problem is around the country. In my recent job, I traveled all over the area, these plastic bottles are universally littered everywhere. Do people really drink that much, while apparently out driving? And do they think it is okay to simply toss the empty bottle out the car window? Maybe put a $1 deposit on the bottle? That would slow the littering. And the drinking, I think that with pot smoking is getting out of hand, but no easy fix as the moral fabric of the country is gone.

I live in NH. Massatwoshits citizens flock to our liquor stores, strategically placed on our borders. The only alcohol purchased in Massatwoshits is by people who have no car.( But I have see Mass. taxis.) If you could go and sit in the parking lot, you’d see Mass.cars, NY, and Connecticut. 10 to 1.

"The human condition IS the problem."

I would have sample bottles disappear primarily for the litter generated by oblivious humans.

Is it the airlines that are dumping these little, empty bottles from the sky on to the cities below?

The original book “banned in Boston” was Huckleberry Finn, and it wasn’t actually banned in Boston, but taken off the shelves of the Concord Public Library. (I used to stop there, same building, on my way home from Raytheon, Bedford.) Concord had been a hotbed of the abolition movement, and the latter generation needed a cause to attach themselves to, so Huck Finn became their target.
