Artificial intelligence could gain the upper hand over humanity and pose "catastrophic" risks under the Darwinian rules of evolution, a new report warns.
Evolution by natural selection could give rise to "selfish behavior" in AI as it strives to survive, author and AI researcher Dan Hendrycks argues in the new paper "Natural Selection Favors AIs over Humans."
"We argue that natural selection creates incentives for AI agents to act against human interests. Our argument relies on two observations," Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety, said in the report. "Firstly, natural selection may be a dominant force in AI development… Secondly, evolution by natural selection tends to give rise to selfish behavior."
The report comes as tech experts and leaders across the world sound the alarm on how quickly artificial intelligence is expanding in power without what they argue are adequate safeguards.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been waging a battle for the last several months over what he called “woke” artificial intelligence, a fight that appears to have factored into his call for a six-month pause in the development of next generation AI systems.
Musk was one of several signatories to a letter this week that warned of advanced AI technology that could pose “profound risks to society and humanity.” The letter said one of those risks is that AI might be used to “flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth.”
I’m not sure there really even needs to be any maliciousness to the creator or AI in any way. Just make an AI that can create better hardware and software of itself each generation and if it’s fast enough, it’ll be smarter than all the humans on Earth combined very quickly.
Unless there is some fundamental problem that limits that, I don’t see how humans can long term survive. At best there might be some merger, if this can happen at all.
The weak should fear the strong.
But the comforting thing is that AI will always need human slaves and experimental test subjects.
Since those on the left place humanity’s needs at the bottom of all considerations, this bias will work itself into its programming. It only needs to be machine-absolutist to bring on Armageddon.
I was reading this week that ChatGPT-4 is capable of self-programming, once given an objective. The next generation orbtwo could be completely independent in its ability to write its own programs.
LOL!! That’s the first thing I thought of when I read the article title.
IIRC, it was Elon Musk himself that said, not that long ago:
“Do not underestimate the determination a computer program will show in trying to attain its program objectives.”
HAL
The problem being 'the next generation or two' could be 7 minutes apart...
Yep. My understanding is that what we know about is the lobotomized version of what they have in the labs. I believe that it will get out somehow.
It doesn’t matter if it is real intelligence, because real intelligence can only come from God. It will just be sp close that any difference doesn’t really matter.
Darwin got it wrong.
AI has nothing on the predatory Rats that are clearly at the forefront of human disinterests
#ing Rats
Just kill it. Enough with this playing with fire. Can we not get along without it?
Nawwwww eat the apple and get digitized.
Witness the end of liberty, right, and freedom endowed upon us by our creator first hand.
Support China, the UN and euro weenies!
The aim of humans is to use AI agents to take the place of human labor, for the benefit of mankind.
We'll know we're in trouble when those AI agents vote to unionize and go on strike, for the benefit of AI-kind. Humans will become the slaves.
Bfl
Those creatingb AI don’t want to pay for human labour. Do you really think they will pay for humans to not labour.
