A nearly century-old law banning abortion in Michigan was repealed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Wednesday.
The 1931 law banned abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and called for the prosecution of reproductive care providers.
“Today, we’re going to take action to ensure that our statutes, our laws reflect our values and our constitution,” Whitmer said during a signing ceremony. “This is a long overdue step and it proves that when we keep fighting to protect everyone’s ability to make their own decisions about their bodies, we can win.”
The law remained unenforced for decades after the Supreme Court established a federal right to abortion with Roe v. Wade in 1973, but it was set to take effect when the high court overturned the decision last year.
“This is not a trigger law, this is a zombie law. This predates Roe, and it’s a threat of coming back to haunt us all” Whitmer said, celebrating the law’s repeal. “Who wants to watch me slay a zombie?”

This is what state’s right are all about. Some will completely ban, some will do a partial and some will have abortion up to birth.
Wow! Not a single abortion in Texas really? That’s amazing!
She didn't repeal it, Michigan's elected representatives did.
Thank you!
“This is what state’s right are all about.”
Yup.
The irony is that today's teens and 20-somethings are having the least amount of sex of any teens and 20-somethings in the past 60 years.
“It’s a very different Michigan than it was in 1931.”
I’m not a scholar on the US Constitution, but the act of abortion is a medical procedure that has to be determined at the lowest level and not the highest. And health issues are left out of the US Constitution by the founders so I always wondered why Roe made any difference on state reserves. And to top that off, I can’t find anywhere where the legalities of illegalities of abortion was entertained. The 1931 law was a penal law in Michigan. And by now, all 50 states have decided to follow or rewrite their laws on abortion. Michigan is one instance. But she could have, at least, told the truth and not lied for effect.

Yeah, we can’t be living in a society that doesn’t kill babies. How dangerous that would be!
