Janet Protasiewicz’s over conservative Dan Kelly will allow the court's new liberal majority to determine the future of key issues like abortion rights.
Janet Protasiewicz, a judge on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, has won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, NBC News projects, giving liberals their first majority on the state’s highest court in 15 years.
Protasiewicz defeated conservative Dan Kelly, a former state Supreme Court justice, on Tuesday in what became the most expensive state Supreme Court race in U.S. history and one of the most closely watched elections of 2023.
Protasiewicz’s victory will allow the court’s new liberal majority to determine the future of several pivotal issues the bench is likely to decide in the coming years, including abortion rights, the state’s gerrymandered legislative maps and election administration — including, possibly, the outcome of the 2024 presidential race in the battleground state.
With 85% of the expected vote counted, Protasiewicz had the support of 55% percent of voters, while Kelly had 45% percent.
Conservative-leaning justices hold a 4-3 majority on the court. Protasiewicz will fill the seat being vacated by retiring conservative Justice Patience Roggensack, giving liberals the majority for the first time since 2008. Protasiewicz was elected to a 10-year term.

Patience Roggensack [83 years old in July] announced she would not run for re-election in 2023, and would retire at the end of her present term, which expires on July 31, 2023. Before the nonpartisan primary in the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election, Roggensack endorsed Waukesha County circuit judge Jennifer Dorow.
After Dorow was eliminated in the primary, Roggensack conspicuously declined to endorse the only remaining conservative candidate in the race—former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Daniel Kelly.
Eight days before the April general election, Roggensack's daughter, Milwaukee County circuit judge Ellen Brostrom, wrote an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel declaring that Kelly was unfit to serve on the court and encouraging support for Kelly's liberal opponent, Janet Protasiewicz.
Assistant Democrat Patience Roggensack pulled a Ginsburg and handed the seat to the Democrats.
She could have mentored a replacement much earlier, but apparently her pride got in the way of team play.

Yup. There will be less than zero ballot integrity in 2024. And Wisconsin will shortly be Californicated so that the Republicans will never control the state again and no Republican will ever win a Presidential election again. Same will happen in AZ and eventually GA. You might as well get your hammer and sickle flags ready now.

The Dems are highly organized. My phone # belonged to a dem before I obtained it in 2014. I’d receive texts all the time from various dem orgs. I’d just ignore them. Finally during the primaries in 2020 I texted a few back. I texted back one stating that I’d be voting for Trump and they should consider voting for him too. They called me back and I had to tell them that I wasn’t Latoya. lol Then I had fun with a Bernie Bro...we texted back and forth for several days. At first I told him that he should practice dumpster diving for scraps of food. lol
Seriously though, I receive at least 30 emails per day from republicans which I ignore because it’s all about donations.
They all have my phone number since I’m on the list and donate to several very specific candidates but they’ve never texted me reminding me to vote.
It’s a damn shame that we couldn’t get rid of Romney’s niece.
