Winn’s novel, which imagines these acts in an explicitly erotic way, is one of two new books that set out to challenge the stereotype of British masculinity in the 20th century’s two world wars. Luke Turner’s Men at War, released next month, is part-history, part-memoir, and explores the complex but underdiscussed spectrum of masculinity that defined the Second World War. Both books question the ideal of the straight, cisgender serviceman, who in films and fiction is too often portrayed as the only true hero of the conflicts. In these new accounts, fluid gender identities and queer sexuality are revealed to have been no barrier to courageous acts.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil
I realize this article is talking about the World Wars, but I’m pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that a soldier was drummed out of the Continental Army for attempted sodomy.
As was rape, murder, theft and other crimes. So what is your point?
And Abraham Lincoln too, they say. Well, for that matter, any arguably virtuous historic figure who has been dead long enough that no one with direct knowledge can defend against such claims. Sure, why not. How about Thomas Jefferson?
Craig Claiborne....please pick up the courtesy phone
Before mass media hypersexualized everything and modern grooming and hygeine made being in proximity to another human body appealing, sex was not as interesting a proposition as it can be nowadays. Further, homosexual sex had a much greater social stigma back then, it wasn’t like there was an easy way for a man to elicit a sex act from another man without a whole lot of risk. And that is before you stick everyone together in a crowded muddy trench and subject them to artillery fire.
This guy is just wishcasting.
Sheesh, Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Of course he wasn’t gay!
Yeah...Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, et al... but according to Valdimir Nabokov the Beefeaters in England were notorious for male prostitution.
But if we were to believe it, then interestingly enough we'd say he was ahead of his time. According to his opponents Jefferson took her out to galas in his day with her dressed to the nines and introducing her not as his servant but as his girlfriend. Some said he took her with him across the ocean to diplomatic events and introduced her the same in France and London. Oh, the inhumanity! Do you want someone like that representing us? (It's how Jefferson's opponents said it.)
Does the author know that armed troops during wartime have been known to shoot someone that they don’t like?
When someone allows lust to completely rule them and perversions seem but intensification, then the whole world is viewed through that perverse haze where ejaculation overrules duty and satiation wipes away honor.
Well put
I remember when the phrase “rolling queers” was still a common and somewhat publicly acceptable thing that you’d commonly hear (not condoning it) and knowing what my dad and uncles attitudes were about homosexuality and such as WW2 veterans I don’t but that line of bs for a minute.
Sure there was likely some acts quietly and secretly but someone claiming anything like gender fluid would almost certainly been mocked incessantly or killed
Oh come on, let’s not forget their favorite targets…..Jesus Christ and his disciples.
Why don’t they document the factual history of rampant homosexuality in the upper echelons of the Third Reich?
We all know that Patton topped Montgomery in Tunisia while the latter was wearing a lace teddy.
The SA storm troopers were heavily homosexual. All homosexuals should look back with fondness at the shock troops of the National Socialists. They have so much in common!
There was probably rape, theft, child molestation, prostitution, and bigamists, too. What’s their point?
My grandfather served in the coast guard with Cesar Romero (gay, but not public about it at the time). The latter did not do anything queer while on the Bayfield and that sort of thing would have been known on a ship. Whatever gay sex took place had to be clandestine and while on liberty.
