NJ girl, 11, found dead by suicide in school bathroom after alleged bullying

An 11-year-old New Jersey girl died by suicide in her school bathroom, police say, just days after her detective dad’s death from cancer — and a week after her mom said she had emailed school officials that she was being bullied.

The sixth-grade student, identified by her mom as Felicia LoAlbo-Melendez, was found unresponsive inside a bathroom stall by another student around 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at F.W. Holbein School in Mount Holly, the Daily Voice reported.

“Help was immediately sought from staff members, and lifesaving measures were taken by school officials, police and emergency medical technicians,” the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office told New Jersey 101.5.

“The student was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she was pronounced dead on Feb. 8,” it added.

An autopsy performed by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the sixth-grader died from suicide.

“An investigation into the student’s death by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, which included a review of the school’s surveillance cameras, determined that she was alone in the restroom when this tragic action occurred,” the office told NJ.com.

No foul play was involved in her death, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Felicia’s death came shortly after her dad — NJ Transit Detective Alexis Melendez — died of pancreatic cancer on Jan. 25 and about a week after she emailed school officials that she and her friends were being bullied, according to her mother.

“She herself had written numerous emails to the administration detailing the events, yet no one was ever questioned,” her mom, Elaina LoAlbo, told NJ.com on Saturday.

Only 3 days after 14-year-old Adriana Kuch of New Jersey committed suicide on February 3 after she was assaulted in her school, this 11-year-old girl in NJ committed suicide in her school's bathroom on February 6.

Her father's passing must've been a factor, but also she was (reportedly) bullied at school.

This story is only making the news now.

A quick search brings up reports that say the rate of suicide among children (as young as 5) has been increasing.

Now who you suppose was doing the bullying?

I have seen children in the fourth through seventh grades be absolutely vicious to a students whose parent died.

Once, “Ha, ha your father’s dead.” A girl turning on a friend whose father died, and her dying less than a month later. Had she been fearing that and lashed out?

I don’t understand why, but I saw it on three occasions fifty years ago. It is not new.

Could be lousy reporting, could be lingering on life support.

The schools are too busy protecting, grooming and defending trans kids to worry about 99.999999% of the other kids.

That is, the second girl’s father died a month later.

This is so sad and shocking.

These stories are being hidden so that we won’t learn the extent of bullying deaths in the public schools.

Now who you suppose was doing the bullying?

We'll know, if the school district pulls the "confidentiality" blanket over the circumstances.

Yes, kids have always been cruel. As you said, it’s nothing new.

But, I don’t remember so many stories of young children taking their own lives in those days.

If your troubled child is being bullied at school, don't send an email. Show up in person and read the riot act to the principal and the teacher.

It's a hard time for the mother now. But when she feels better and heals, she should sue the school for all she can. It's the threat of losing the benjamins which will make the school sit up and take notice.

Right. There always has been bullying; I was. But now with social media, cell photos that can be broadcast to hundreds in the period of a few seconds, both parents working and not as engaged as our parents were ... it must be so much worse.

Agreed that cell phones & social media make bullying so much worse today.

There’s no mention that the bullying of this 11yo girl was on video.

But, the first girl (age 14) was mortified because the attack on her was put online.

Still, some young children have committed suicide, even though the bullying was never put on video (as far as we know).

We won’t work in a Hostile Work Environment.

Why do we expect children to?

Mom, you should have pulled your daughter out of there.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

My sister died in an auto accident, she left behind her 3 yo little girl who became ours. I think she was in second or third grade and came home from school hysterically crying, and just a mess. She finally told me, a boy in her class was making fun of her mother’s death. She thought it was me who had died because she considerd me her mom. I called the boy’s mother because I wanted it stopped. The mom was horrified, later brought him to our home with a big box of cupcakes, he apologized so sincerely and sweet. He promised he would never do it again to anyone.

An 11 year old losing her father? Yikes! That alone can devastate a kid that age.

What’s really disgusting is that the current climate with public schools has me reading the title and asking “was the girl a biological girl or were they indoctrinated into trans bs?”
And the second thought is “do I really want to know?”

May God be with their family regardless, the death of any child is wrong.
