The country was misled on a vital matter-and it wasn't Boris Johnson's parties (Ukraine)
DailyMail.com ^ | 4/1/2023 | Peter Hitchens

The inflated grandees of Parliament's Privileges Committee are currently pondering the vast issue of whether Al "Boris" Johnson misled the Commons about some office parties...

there is a far more important case in which a senior Minister needs to answer charges of misleading Parliament...

This country's attitude towards events in Ukraine is based on a slavish decision to do what the Americans tell us to do, rather than on any serious estimate of our own national interest. I believe this may drag us into prolonged war.

Even the poor King must take part, forced to say during his German visit that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was "unprovoked". This assertion is highly contentious and makes our monarch look silly and ill-informed.

Even the anti-Russian Washington hawk Robert Kagan has clearly stated that it was provoked. Provocation does not, of course, justify any such invasion, but admitting that it took place might make our own policy less wildly militant and risky.

It is regrettable but true that most of our media and political class are unaware of one of the biggest events in modern European history-that this crisis began with the lawless overthrow of Ukraine's legitimately elected president, Viktor Yanukovich in 2014. There is little doubt that this coup had Western backing.

Peaceful protests in Kiev had been infiltrated by ultra-Right thugs...

David Roman, then a correspondent in Kiev for the Wall Street Journal, has since described the events: 'I must correct the impression...that a courageous popular response to armed repression led to victory for the protesters.

On the contrary, on the last days of February 2014, armed thugs-many, if not most, heavily armed far-Right and neo-Nazi activists from western Ukraine-stormed Maidan square, killing and capturing police officers and forcing the hand of a government that, as well as being unpopular...

Totally agree. Following the Biden collection of clowns, mentally ill weirdos, low IQ journalists, and other losers is idiotic. If our “weird class” wants it, run the other way.

A rather one-sided version of events in 2014.

The truth always is always a one-sided version, just as the lie is as well.

But one must examine the proof that supports truth. It's abundant, in this case, if you are willing to set aside biases, and see it for what it is.

I agree. The fact that he’s decided to live in Russia for the past 10yrs, speaks volumes about his loyalty to the country of which he was head of state. It’s pretty disgusting, but he “knows which side his bread is buttered on”.

After Bucha all Peter Hitchens’ musings about who did whom and in what order is nothing but water under the bridge… No matter how clever and educated he actually is.

“Provoked” is too strong a word, but yes, the West does have some responsibility for the war.

No, the west has no responsibility at all. The war was wrought by Russia. There is no other person or nation responsible.

To even hint that is true makes you an aider and abettor to the war criminals hiding in Moscow

A rather one-sided version of events in 2014.

What part of the violent lawless unconstitutional revolution resulting in the disenfranchisement of east and south Ukraine do you think is misrepresented?

Yes, and our departure from Afghanistan was a brilliant victory and an example of courageous leadership. Bert thank you! It is always informative to have someone who has completely bought into nonsense from the Biden administration, AOC, MSM, deep state, and Etal. regurgitate what they have been told. Few can do that as well as you can. /s

You neo isolationist guys are just stupid and extremely narrow minded in your focus.

You assume that any thought contrary to your view through a paper towel tube is pro Biden. If you will crawl out from under your rock, you can observe there is a big world out there

You are flagrantly wrong in hoping to blame all who really think for being Biden supporters

World War I was the original sin and the once proud British Empire has paid for it subordinated to the United States but is this Ukraine matter a way station to the end of the “American Empire”?

World War I a big mistake the Progressive Woodrow Wilson leading the USA into managing and controlling the world.

And successive generations even Republican-Conservative ones live in the pile of manure the Progressive Wilson gave to us.

Interesting that you paint anyone who does not go along with the narrative as a “neo isolationist” who is “stupid and extremely narrow minded”.

Sadly, I have been reading your posts and interacting with you for nearly 20 years and it has become obvious that you Have been experiencing fairly severe cognitive decline. Judging from your recent posting history and what you have written in your profile... it would be advisable for you to look up the definition of the Dunning–Kruger effect.

You wrote, in part: “...disenfranchisement of east and south Ukraine”. Apart from your expert knowledge of the big words nothing in this statement is even close to reality. Simple Wikipedia search shows that despite “violent lawless unconstitutional revolution” that happened in 2014, in five years, in 2019 all “disenfranchised” Russian-speaking regions of Eastern Ukraine, namely Kharkiv, Odessa, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, along with virtually all other regions of Ukraine (besides occupied Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk), gladly voted for the future arch-Nazi and devil-incarnation President Zelenski (72% of the total vote), not in one, but in two of the presidential electoral rounds. And, following your twisted preference for rhetorical smart-ass leading questions: are you going to claim that Zelenski presidential election was illegitimate?

Ok genius. Let’s use your standard of truth Wikipedia. “Election was not held due to the War in Donbass or annexation by Russia”…

Thank you again for sharing your perspective here. Unfortunately, the neocon Biden loving war hawks here could not care less that there have been huge numbers of KIA and severely wounded good people on both sides of this.

They believe that there is nothing wrong with men and boys young and old being abducted daily and forced into service. They have often been sent into armed conflict with little to no actual training within as little as a week or two. The Russian army despite the current propaganda is for the most part a well-equipped trained force. I doubt that the soldiers on the Russian side take much pleasure in slaughtering these hapless souls who are for the most part closely related by history, heritage, and genetics.

This is a huge tragedy that could easily have been prevented if we had competent leadership in charge on our side. These people are being sacrificed for political purposes by botched policy. The numbers are incredible. We have large numbers of both Russians and Ukrainians in our community, all are heart broken and all just want this pointless bloodshed to stop.

How can any of our fellow Freepers believe that the Biden administration is capable of leading any foreign initiative to a successful end? It is total madness. This is from a person whose family is deeply tied to our own military.
