Disney quietly took power from DeSantis’ new board before state takeover

The battle between Disney and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may not be over yet.

The new board handpicked by the Republican governor to oversee Disney’s special taxing district said Wednesday it is considering legal action over a multi-decade agreement reached between the entertainment giant and the outgoing board in the days before the state’s hostile takeover last month.

Under the agreement – quietly approved on February 8 as Florida lawmakers met in special session to hand DeSantis control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District – Disney would maintain control over much of its vast footprint in Central Florida for 30 years and, in some cases, the board can’t take significant action without first getting approval from the company.

“This essentially makes Disney the government,” board member Ron Peri said during Wednesday’s meeting, according to video posted by an Orlando television station. “This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintaining the roads and maintaining basic infrastructure.”

The episode is the latest twist in a yearlong saga between Disney and DeSantis, who has battled the company as he tries to tally conservative victories ahead of a likely bid for the 2024 GOP nomination.

“This is really embarrassing. Especially that its in writing this agreement is valid until Prince Harrys daughter turns 31. It really says that and nobody f-ing read it.”

Either that, or Disney had some juicy offers from other states (think Stadiums) and DeSantis had to find a way to back out of what he started. And while it’s hard to imagine Disney leaving Florida, the UAW never thought that their line of work would end in the Detroit area...but companies have breaking points.

Read the article. The agreement was entered into by the departing Disney stooges on the board. Of course they read it. That passage is a middle finger to the government of Florida

DOES it say the state MUST MAINTAIN THE ROADS????

Might need a couple of Florida’s famous sinkholes.

That’s fine. Cut the tax breaks and let it bear its full share.

I think most Americans are tired of Disney anyway.

What’s really embarrassing is that DeSantis (and team) took so much credit for bringing Disney to heal when they knew it was pretty much an empty gesture.

Actually road maintenance is one of the few things left to the current board.

So you’re saying that everything we heard about DeSantis standing up to Disney wasn’t real - he never had the power to do so?

You need to go into fiction writing. I said no such thing. The outgoing board was essentially deposed by the legislation. On their way out they quietly noticed and voted on this deal.
At least here in CA,
All counties, agencies and boards are subdivisions of the state, and the Legislature has plenary power to abolish them.
The Florida legislature should abolish the Reed Creek District and create a new District

Disney’s maneuver is like a hiker throwing their backpack at a grizzly bear as they are being chased - it might very briefly delay the inevitable.

Not only is this sort of "royal decree" absurd on its face and won't survive the calendar year, it just cements the unseriousness of the people fighting on that side.

Why, except to evade the appropriate application of existing laws, would a loophole involving descendants of the king of a foreign nation be cited to bind a local Florida municipal region's local services?

You know what would be just peachy? If DeSantis somehow flipped the script and got every one of Disney's copyrights to expire 21 years after Walt died (that would be 1977) or if they were more generous, the last of his descendants (2034, a lifetime in politics, but in business it would be catastrophic for Disney's corporate holdings to have the mouse and all the princesses become public domain.)

Yo DeSantis, I have loved you as FL governor, but trust me when I say, they are giving you a microcosm of what the DC cabal will do to you.

You’d best be Trump’s LT and earn your street-cred.

Your political lust is outweighing your loyalty.

“The Florida legislature should abolish the Reed Creek District and create a new District”

...and yet they did not. Makes one wonder why they left such a GAPING HOLE in their plan.

The FL AG may have an angle if she can show a violation of the FLA Sunshine Laws.

The answer to that is usually $$$$$$$, especially where politicians are involved.
