Teachers union boss Randi Weingarten ripped into Americans critical of public education, accusing them of advancing an “extremist scheme” to replace government-run schools with private, religious, online, and homeschools. Speaking to the National Press Club this week, Weingarten — whose American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is the second largest teachers’ labor union in the nation — targeted the DeVos, Bradley, Koch, Uihlein, and Walton family foundations for their criticism of public schools.
“The Betsy DeVos wing of the school privatization movement is methodically working its plan: Starve public schools of the funds they need to succeed,” Weingarten said. “Criticize them for their shortcomings. Erode trust in public schools by stoking fear and division, including attempting to pit parents against teachers. Replace them with private, religious, online, and home schools.” Weingarten suggested that such efforts were supported by few people, declaring, “It’s an extremist scheme by a very vocal minority of Americans.”…
“This is literally a matter of life and death,” Weingarten said. “These attacks on public education make it increasingly difficult to create the welcoming, safe environment that our students need and deserve.” The “crisis will only get worse as Gov. DeSantis’ universal voucher bill kicks in. What will the loss of $4 billion do to safety in Florida’s public schools?” Weingarten said.

It’s because the public schools are dangerous and have terrible educational outcomes.
The families left in large cities have the money to pony up for private schools. It’s not a little bit of money. If you have two kids it’s like buying a BMW 3 series every September and giving it away to a lucky person at the end of May.
Otherwise they move into the relatively sane countryside to go to public schools there.
I think at every level we need to personally, both privately and publicly, ask our local teachers if they agree or renounce such comments. If they latter, will they resign from the teachers union or what? I think the time is right to begin working this from the ground up.
They want to be able to give your kids irreversible hormone treatments and surgeries without the parent’s knowledge or consent and they call us “extreme”?

We homeschooled our younger child from 7th Grade. So glad we did. He would’ve been a suicide statistic....and the “school” didn’t give a damn.
He graduated HS with an associates degree. At 20 he had a bachelor’s.
At 20...working on his Masters.
