North Carolina Republicans scrapped the state's long-lived pistol permit requirement Wednesday, aided by the absence of several Democrats, which gave Republicans the numbers they needed to overturn Gov. Roy Cooper's veto for the first time since Republicans lost their veto-proof super majorities in the 2018 elections.

North Carolina Republicans scrapped the state’s long-lived pistol permit requirement Wednesday, aided by the absence of several key Democrats, which gave Republicans the numbers they needed to overturn Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto for the first time since the GOP lost their veto-proof super majorities in the 2018 elections.

No longer will North Carolinians buying a handgun need to get permission first from their local sheriff. They’ll still need a federal background check to buy from a licensed dealer, which means handgun purchases in the state will be treated the same as rifles and shotguns.

This is about pistol purchases and is kinda much ado about nothing. If you had your concealed handgun permit, you did not need permission from the county sheriff.

Still have the Fed stuff to deal with.

The “permission slip” from the county shefiff is a holdover thing from the DemoKKKrat reconstruction, Jim Crow era to ensure that minorities were unarmed and unable to defend themselves from the terrorism arm of the DemoKKKrat Party, aka the KKK.

it seems like a good/ big deal to me ( I am NOT an NC resident).

But that fact that people no longer have to go to any sort of LE office, (presumably) pay money and APPLY for, wait and then be “granted” a license. And then also, (presumably) repeat the process to renew expired licenses.

To Then be able to then go buy a pistol and go through all of the fed poaperwork.

That seems like a huge win.

I think it is huge for freedom, myself. You can go right to the gun store, you don’t need to ask your local Sheriff if it is ok first. I believe this law was a holdover from Jim Crow.

You used to either have to pay for a concealed carry license, or buy a pistol permit for each one. The local Sheriff could deny.

Yes it is a good thing. I was wrong when I said much ado about nothing because for me I have a concealed handgun permit.

I doubt the sheriff did any serious investigating anyhow.

In the Nashville shooting case a few days ago the sheriff was saying he had not been notified by the shooters doctors that he/she was under medical treatment. So I’m not sure the sheriff has the resources to investigate every applicant.

Good news. Not make NC a constitutional carry state. Repeal all gun laws.

if it is anything like Mass... it takes a TON of “ judgement” and “discretion” out of the hands of LE. Which can often times be completely arbitrary.

1. License/ renewals are “only” processed at certain, narrow times, or “by appointment only” by your licensing authority. and if the officer that does it has to go on a call. Well, that is the priority. There is only One guy, and they can only do it at that specific time.

2. Approval time can take hours or months, depending on the department, cheif and if they are pro or anti 2A.. “ yes, it has been 6 months, your application is in process and pending, we are short staffed and these things take time”.

3. Once approved, they are sent off to a different entity, for printing the licenses. and laminating. As they are short staffed, they only do the these in batches. And as they are short staffed, they are only able to complete a few of the hundreds that are pending, first in first out..

Then, once laminated.. They have to be mailed.. And once again.. As they are short staffed, they only mail these out twice a month...on weds..

it should be black and white. At time of sale, No record? Pass.

I went thru a CC permit class a few years ago...here in OK.

I started to fill out the paperwork...But I got to thinking. Do I really want my name on a list? I'm not a criminal, I'm a honest law-abiding citizen.

Sometime later...OK. signed into law open carry / concealed carry for anyone that wants to. No permits.

The churches that have a Christian School in connection were looked on as “educational property” by the lawmen and there was already a prosecution of a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church (so I heard TIFWIW) in Walkertown for simply having a pistol in the church parking lot on Sunday! The gen assembly here allows those churches to allow concealed carry as other churches around the state have since the last revision of the CHL law. Liberal Methodist Churches and Unitarian Universalists will still post their property against weapons.

Your name isn't on a list, it's already on many lists. We're way past the time of privacy.

Stupid law to begin with.

It started with Jim Crow. If the sheriff said no, then that was that.

They say they don't have a database, but here in NY I have to report electronically every few years, it's crazy. Then they unexpectedly let the lists slip out, always by mistake. It's total B.S.

Good. Just so everybody knows, this pistol purchase permit system the gun grabbers were trying to protect was an old Jim Crow law. You see, they didn’t want the “wrong” sort of people to be able to purchase pistols.....

BTW, almost all the early efforts at gun control were done for similar reasons.

Pretty meaningless. In NC you can go to any sheriff and get a handfull of permits anytime you want.
