I agree with Elon and Steve but the United States is not the only country researching this.
China, India, Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Iran...
Perhaps a breakthrough could happen in an even less developed country. Just because the overall population lives in poverty, doesn’t mean a rich, educated elite doesn’t exist.

So can earthmoving equipment, adding machines, the wheel, etc. Oh, and the computer. We used to call these things tools that helped us live better lives.
I now realize that AI is not a new technology, but rather a name for a fear that technology is to be feared rather than appreciated. Another way of weaponizing fear. Another way of creating an enemy.

The “good tech billionaires” might build a good AI system to battle the many evil versions, but the good system will likely be acquired or corrupted.
AI will manage the next round of elections, dwarfing the election rigging of 2020.
