Russian troops losing momentum in battle of Bakhmut as Ukraine puts up strong defence

The initial upper hand gained by the Russian forces in Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city which Moscow has spent months trying to capture, seems to have fizzled out as Kyiv’s counteroffensive has been successful in stalling the advances made by Kremlin.

On Friday, Ukraine's commander in chief Lt Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi said in a Facebook post that the situation in the eastern city is “stabilising”.

Acknowledging that the situation on Ukraine's frontlines "is the toughest in the Bakhmut direction”, Lt Gen Zaluzhnyi said that due to the “tremendous efforts” of the Ukrainian forces “we are managing to stabilise the situation".

He posted on the social media network after briefing the UK's Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, about the situation in Ukraine.

In recent months, the eastern city has become the centre of the biggest battle between Russia and Ukraine. For Moscow, Bakhmut is a key target in its plans to fully capture the industrialised eastern region of Donbas.

However, the long-drawn-out war yielded little results for the Russian offensive despite losing thousands of troops.

On Thursday, the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Oleksandr Syrsky, claimed that Russian forces were "exhausted" near Bakhmut, reports BBC.

He added that Russia is “losing significant strength", though it "has not given up hope of taking Bakhmut at all costs despite losses in manpower and equipment”.

"Very soon we will take advantage of this opportunity, like we did near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliya and Kupiansk," he was quoted as saying, referring to successful Ukrainian counter-offensives last year.

However, despite Ukraine’s assertion that Moscow’s attack was flagging near Bakhmut, the Russian forces launched new assaults in the northern and southern stretches of the front in the Donbas region.

Heavy fighting was reported in the northern sector along a stretch of front running from Lyman to Kupiansk as well as in the south at Avdiivka on the outskirts of the Russian-held city of Donetsk.

Yeppers, the Russians keep gaining ground, but that just means they’re losing.

They’re almost out of ammunition, too!

Putin’s is sick and on the verge of death.

Putin will be overthrown any day now because his popularity is largely in the minority with about 80%.

Russia is not making daily gains. The change of which you speak is measured in feet. The change is repelled when it is determined to be unacceptable

The truth is classified in war. We get bits and pieces and have a good idea of a few months ago. Which means what happens today will be known in a month at the earliest, maybe. This is not like the coverage of the Gulf Wars where the US dominated both times. The US press are outsiders to this conflict.

As for Macgregor, what ever the truth is, he is high on my list of people who will not tell it. He has been hard selling for Russia since the invasion started. That is not a endorsement of the western press which is careful about not reporting what makes Ukraine look bad.

The more honest from the Russian side are the hardcore nationalists and military bloggers like Igor Girkin. They are far from saints, just more honest and less deceptive about it.

This image of Bakhmut provided by pro-Ukrainian LiveUAmap.com definitely shows the Ukrainians are winning this one!

Just because the Russians have them surrounded and have taken the eastern half of Bakhmut doesn't mean anything.

If this isn't a image of victory for the Ukes, I don't know what is.

“They’re defending their own country.”

Precisely. And Ukraine has been a country much longer than Muskovy.

There is a saying:

“If putin/russia stops fighting, the war ends.

“If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends”

>>Macgregor the clown has been wrong on everything since the beginning

The Demon-crats opposed MacGregor’s nomination by Trump to be the U.S. Ambassordor to Germany because he supposedly made “racist, xenophobic, and anti-Semitic” remarks.

According to Foreign Policy magazine, MacGregor called refugees fleeing Middle-East violence “unwanted Muslim invaders.”

According to CNN, MacGregor “lamented in an interview posted in 2015 that the European Union provided ‘very luxurious and extremely expensive welfare’ benefits to Muslim refugees during the height of the global migrant crisis and that ‘these people are not coming to assimilate or become Europeans–quite the opposite. They’re coming to take over whatever they can get.’”

Also according to CNN, MacGregor “lamented that the US government intervened against Serbian forces, who engaged in ethnic cleansing and war crimes, during the Kosovo War in the 1990s to ‘put, essentially, a Muslim drug mafia in charge of that country.’”

Also according to CNN, “Macgregor’s hardline opinions on immigration also applied to immigration in the US. Macgregor warned that the most serious threat to US national security was in Mexico and that the country undermined ‘the very strengthened cohesion of our society.’ He claimed that ‘hostile Islamist cells’ operating out of South America were coming into the US through the US border. ‘You can make a damn good argument that the most serious threat to the United States in American society today is the criminality in Mexico, the drug cartels and the human trafficking that is driving millions of Mexicans with no education, no skills and the wrong culture into the United States, placing them essentially as wards of the American people,’ said Macgregor in 2012.”

MacGregor sounds pretty sane to me.

Macgregor was the top planner for General Wesley Clark, the military commander of NATO, for its 1999 attack on Serbia.

And both of them were fired like dogs for trying to start WW3 at the Pristina airport in Kosovo.

No.

Not according to DPA war channel, more like hundreds of yards, still you are correct in the main it’s small gains. Yet steady.

Obviously some ares of the front remain static.

Russian will retain Crimea, and gain the Eastern regions of Ukraine.

Not a bet many would take, given the Russians lack of armor and shell shortages, no to mention losing 1000 dead or more day. With Putin’s election campaign coming up further mobilization is in doubt; Russians are beginning to realize that its better to go to prison or flee the country, than to be sent to certain death or maiming for no cause other than Putin’s ego.

Not only was your hero (now a low ranking publicity hound) Weaselly Clark’s planner, but those plans included bombing civilians - something for which your beloved Russians are going as ongoing war crimes.
