Nearly a third of the LGBT+ characters to have featured on US TV over the past year will not be returning in future, a new report has revealed.
Over the period between 1 June 2022 and 31 May 2023, a total of 596 LGBT+ characters were featured on scripted TV.
Of these, 175 will not be returning in the following season, as a result of series being cancelled or coming to a pre-agreed end. The majority of these characters (140) are the result of series being cancelled.
The statistics are taken from the annual report published by the US media monitoring organisation GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).
The report takes into account LGBT+ characters across scripted primetime broadcast networks, scripted primetime cable networks, and scripted series on the eight major US streaming platforms: Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount+.
Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of GLAAD, describes the significant cancellation rates of LGBT+ “disappointing”.

During commercials I mute the sound and then play “spot the homosexual”. Advertisers are getting sneaky, almost subliminal in their placement of homosexuals.
Usually if it a montage it is almost 100% to have at least one “gay” couple.
It is not just advertising, almost every “reality” has to have at least one (if not more) homosexual on the program.
If an alien was watching our TV programs in space they would think the majority of Americans are black and all white guys are homosexual.
I limit my TV watching to maximum two hours a day in the evening so my observations may not be correct for the other 22 hours in the day.
👍😜🤦♂️............................
I hope Netflix gets the hint.
It could also be called a catechism.
Of AIDS?
“ LGBTQW (Whatever) is only at most 6% of the population. It’s estimated to be honestly around 3-4%.”
It feels like the amount of mandatory in-service training required to indoctrinate us about sodomy and sexual perversions of all kinds takes up about 3-4% of my time each year. Thanks taxpayers.
Come on everybody we’ve got quilting to do!
I have counted commercials during breaks on several channels and blacks appear in an average of 9 out of 14 commercials...
Stop LGBTQ+ genocide, or something like this.
yep, my observations are the same.
Don’t want to see as many black people in commercials, watch Telemundo or Univision.
About that "I'm a dinosaur!" Eggo commercial...
Did you happen to notice the white woman in the kitchen behind the black mother?
They disappear because it is obvious they were “shoehorned” into the storyline and and were a token character to begin with.
Just how many shows are written around a character’s sexual choice of partners?
Don’t remember any NYPD variants dealing with their sex lives and the Walking Deal shows had a few but added nothing to the storyline other than to p.o. regular viewers.
When you've got T-Rex
Are they planning on “killing the characters off” due to AIDS?
That way they could refocus the attention on it.
12%?
1.8% is the last best number I have seen on how many queers are in society.
1.8%.
And there will be twice as many freaks in the new shows premiering in the fall; count on it.
