Uganda's parliament has passed a bill which would criminalise people who identify as gay, or a sexual minority.
Individuals could face lengthy prison terms if the bill is signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni.
Under the proposed legislation, friends, family and members of the community would have a duty to report individuals in same-sex relationships to the authorities.
Homosexual acts are already illegal in the east African country.
But the bill seeks to go further and criminalise people on the basis of their sexual identity.
The bill, which was first tabled earlier this month, passed with widespread support in Uganda's parliament on Tuesday.
It will now go to President Museveni who can choose to use his veto - and maintain good relations with Western donors and investors - or sign it into law.
The bill also stipulates that a person who is convicted of grooming or trafficking children for purposes of engaging them in homosexual activities faces life in prison.
Individuals or institutions which support or fund LGBT rights' activities or organisations, or publish, broadcast and distribute pro-gay media material and literature, also face prosecution and imprisonment.

Grooming should be met at least with castration.
Rape should be met with death or at least loss of all privates.
They are plugging the hole (no pun intended) before things reach the state America is in.
Way to go, Uganda! The older I get, the less tolerance I have for the gay freaks. They are most of them, purely evil, and I think the muzzies have the right idea- hang a few of them each year, and the rest will STFU.
I agree with throwing groomers in jail, but locking people up for long prison terms because they identify as homosexual is nuts.
> Rape should be met with death or at least loss of all privates.
If it’s an actual rape, then yes. But ask a cop how many rape accusations are true. Most aren’t.
Looks like Uganda is trying to win favor from Russia and the Islamic world.
I agree.
Sending gays to prison… could be counterproductive
Why couldn’t they just stay in the closet in the US, when most people knew who was gay, but they just called themselves “roommates” and it was don’t ask, don’t tell.
I am not as extreme as a number of people here on the subject...but I AM NOT BLIND.
It was NEVER gonna stop at “recognition” and then “domestic partnership” etc. etc.
It was always going to lead where it has led to and should have been stopped early on.
I don’t believe in the death penalty for being gay.
Grooming..that’s a WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY and I believe in a monster prison sentence for that...and there are many ways to groom.
Rape is a death penalty to me for ANY kinds of rape.
Like I said, why couldn’t they just stay the #@#@ in the closet? Now with the sick things they have forced upon our children, they leave us no choice but to fight back.
Oh well
Good for them and a bit less drastic than Islamic Cult throwing them off rooftops and better than the US putting them in our churches and schools.
The predatory activism against children far exceeds the homo demo — a systemic evil
Regarding the closet, I no longer GAF about the consequence detailed in the article. The Left eviscerated whatever tolerance/sympathy I once cared to realize.
Excellent. Many other nations should emulate them.
We should not fall for the dishonest journalism here, by any stretch. The law doesn’t criminalize people for some nebulous notion of “being gay,” whatever that means in a public sense. It criminalizes presenting yourself in a formal, marriage-like sexual relationship with someone of the same sex. In other words, you can’t present yourself as “married.” And who could be against the sexualization of children, unless you’re a pervert?
That’s not what this law does. Stop falling for the propaganda.
Yup. Obviously there are some sins that haven’t typically been criminalized, because to enforce them causes more problems. Breaking down doors to investigate “roommates” for suspected sodomitical acts sounds too Big Brother to me.
But we are a couple of Sodom and Gomorrah’s beyond that now, and I think most sensible people are realizing that this **** has gone too far.
Personally, I think gays can’t stay in the closet because flaunting themselves IS their fetish. Normal married people draw a modest curtain around this part of their lives.
BBC That’s all you need to know.
I encourage all homosexuals to relocate to Uganda
Well, that’s one way to keep them from hooking up in public restrooms...
“...being Gay...”
No such thing.
Sodomy is the first stop on that controversial line, though (grooming being a later stop). Outlaw (or re-outlaw) sodomy, and hold the line while a certain fraction of the population objects vociferously, and begin prosecuting flagrant cases. See where and what that gets you and consider next steps in terms of additional laws. But don’t recognize an identity associated with the act.
