A group of 23 state attorneys general are demanding that Hyundai and Kia take further action to prevent an ongoing surge of thefts, after a recent social media trend highlighted the vehicles’ lack of a particular anti-theft device.
Hyundai and Kia opted not to equip their cars with engine immobilizers until late 2021, an anti-theft device that the attorneys general argued became an industry standard several years earlier.
The automakers announced last month that they were rolling out a software update to their vehicles that would extend the alarm sound and require the key be in the ignition to start.
However, the state attorneys general noted in a letter to the carmakers on Monday that the companies’ software update will not be available to most affected vehicles until June and cannot be installed on some models for technical reasons.

I hear auto insurance carriers are starting to drop coverage on these vehicles for this reason......I’m surprised that hasn’t curbed sales enough to force the manufacturer to take action.

They did take action...for FUTURE sales. But the older cars are screwed.
You nailed it. The AGs are blaming the auto manufacturers for the AGs purposeful failure to punish criminals.
What will force them is the class action lawsuits that they are facting.

Not true. I bought a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe SEL in Aug.2020, it came standard with push button start, which means it has an engine immoblilizer. The SEL is one step up from the base model Santa Fe SE, not top of the line by any means. Hyundai & Kia vehicles with push button start have engine immobilizers, and push button start is common on a lot of their vehicles built prior to 2021. My insurance agent is more than happy to take my money.

It is crazy. In canada it’s the law to include these. Not so in the US. So why is it the auto-makers fault? As long as the auto maker didn’t lie to the consumer about it...they shouldn’t be held liable. Other than the bad press they receive.
Gun manufacturers are not responsible for murders.
Car companies are not responsible for car thefts.
Knife companies are not responsible for stabbings................
