There's been a trend this NHL season that has nothing to do with the sport's on-ice product. Several teams have announced plans to hold Pride Nights, during which players wear jerseys celebrating the LGBTQ+ community either during warmups or games -- or both.
But many of those plans have been scraped by teams after being made public. The most recent example came on March 7, when Minnesota Wild players chose to not wear special Pride Night jerseys that had been designed.
Below is a deeper dive into why this is happening among NHL teams.

The NFL’s “in your face” nights are very tedious.
I’ve seen enough fights in hockey games, those players DO NOT have limp wrists, even given that most are from Canada (always exceptions to the rules). So, NO NEED for them to go queer.
that kind of hockey disappeared years ago ...
Gay Pride is out of fashion just like nehru jackets and bell bottoms.......................
That bites. I pretty much stopped watching when they made the players were helmets. Made it a beach to figure out who was who.
One could call it a Say Gay Fray Delay Day
The article is literally blaming Russia and Putin
Western societal rot is not the fault of the Russians.
But...
They have gone all gay this year, and I'm not gonna put up with it. They are not a must have sport for me. I haven't watched even one period of NHL this year, after watching multiple games on TV last season. I'm just one guy. The NFL can lose me and not miss me. NHL can too, but I make more of an impact as a percentage of their viewership.
the way the money flows the only way you can hurt them financially is to stop paying for teevee ... they get paid whether you watch them or not ...
As the Athletic notes, five percent of the NHL’s players are Russian.
“These are legitimate fears,” Ben Noble, associate professor of Russian politics at University College London, told the Athletic. “’If you put on a Pride jersey, then there is uncertainty regarding how this would be interpreted by law enforcement in Russia — and that’s a risk. The authorities have the power to enforce this and other legislation selectively. It’s up to them to decide whom they go after.”
It’s Gay Day in Dallas on Tuesday. I’ll pass on the pregame.
After practice, Caps fan Miranda Rosenfelt took her pride flag to get a photo with some of the Capitals players. The flag was part of a giveaway if you purchased a specific ticket package during the Capitals recent Pride Night at Capital One Arena. Alex Ovechkin stopped and took a rare photo with Miranda.
They’re blaming conditions in Russia for Russian players refusal to don the Gay apparel, yet they could not quote one Russian player who said that was the reason for the refusal. It’s all speculation and demonizing, as if no one could possibly have other reasons.
Well, of course
Did they mention Global Warming?
I mean...they should get that one in too...
I got excoriated by several commentors on my favorite team’s fan page last year by saying “Why not Just Play Hockey” in reaction to their ‘pride night’ foolishness.
You’d think I had uttered the vilest expression ever.
It is somewhat comical how the “open-minded, tolerant and diverse” types will verbally attack someone for having a different stance on any matter.
Just a wild guess:
They’re not gay?
