Tal Bachman: Dear Old Testament God, Maybe It's Time For A Comeback Tour
Steyn Online ^ | 12 Mar 2023 | Tal Bachman

Posted on 03/12/2023 3:23:57 PM PDT by Rummyfan

Maybe it's age, but I'm starting to warm up to the God of the Old Testament big-time.

That's the one you're not supposed to like. The one you're supposed to feel embarrassed by. Even outraged. To hear religion-hater Richard Dawkins (and his tedious hordes of mini-mes) tell it, the Old Testament God is the personification of all cosmic vice. In Dawkins' words, he is "arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction".

My immediate response is: okay—maybe he was unpleasant at times. Who isn't? And besides, anyone who ever does anything big is "unpleasant" every once in a while. Goes with the territory. Nice guys finish last, remember? Sometimes you have to kick ass to get stuff done. Everyone knows that. And in this case, we're talking about the Being who created the heavens and earth, and everything therein. You want big? That's big. Occasional unpleasantness is a given at that scale. You can't even hire construction guys to add an extra room on to your house without having a moment or two of unpleasantness. Think about the gargantuan task of trying to create, populate, and properly maintain a world.

A more serious accusation from the God-haters is that the God of the Old Testament isn't just unpleasant—he's evil. And he's evil because he repeatedly committed genocide.

But again, I'm not convinced. Sure, he committed genocide. But that presumes genocide is, by definition, always evil. Maybe God had extenuating circumstances.

God is eternal and what God was he still is. He is the creator, father, and judge of mankind. What god did in the past he will do again if mankind again falls totally into darkness. When God decides to rectify our errors there is no action or lie from Satan that will prevent his righteous wrath.

The New Testament God of wrath and vengeance is set to make an appearance soon enough:

“And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh” (Revelation 19:15-21).

Oh, let me introduce Him to you . . . His name is Jesus Christ.

They no longer fear God or his wrath. They have made themselves god.

God is God and I thank God that He is patient in His love as He looks over how humans treat Him along with other humans and waits for our opportunities to repent.

I do not fear fire, until my house is on fire.

Funny story Randy Bachman (Tal's dad) related on an earlier Steyn interview:

He had spent the day in the studio with Lenny Kravitz and mentioned it to his daughter when he got home: "You were with LENNY KRAVITZ! That is sooo cool!!"

Randy said hey, you're dad is Randy Bachman, I'm not exactly chopped liver here.

God doesn’t change. The OT God is the same God He always has been. None of His attitudes on anything, have changed.

The OT God was also the one who had a plan to save all of us through God the Son, Jesus Christ.

Excellent article.

Somewhat tongue in cheek, but he does get the point across and I agree with him 100%.

AMOS 5:18

18Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD! What will the Day of the LORD be for you? It will be darkness and not light.
19It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake.

20Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness and not light, even gloom with no brightness in it?…

And, like it says in the New Testament (Galatians 6:7), “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

AMEN!!!!

IMO, the sooner, the better.

God has been drawing and redrawing a deeper and deeper line in the sand for years now. It became the most obvious when obama was elected president the first time.

He is forcing people to choose sides and the evil is becoming so egregious that people simply cannot say at this point that they did not know. They are not choosing out of ignorance any more. It’s with eyes wide open.

They are making their own bed for eternity.

God is the same yesterday today and always. There is no “OT” different from the NT God.
