Hungarian Parliament Debates NATO Enlargement

Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO was debated in parliament on Wednesday. Parliamentary delegations will soon hold talks in Stockholm and Helsinki, while the opposition is accusing the government of stalling the process.

The debate comes as Hungary, like Turkey, has not yet ratified the accession of the two Nordic countries to NATO. Last week, Chancellery Minister Gergely Gulyás and Fidesz group leader Máté Kocsis said that the government supported the two countries’ accession, but there is a dispute in the Fidesz and KDNP groups, and parliamentary delegations will soon travel to the countries concerned to settle the dispute.

“The main opposition party, the left-liberal Democratic Coalition (DK), criticized the government for the delay in ratification. “The accession of Finland and Sweden will strengthen the alliance, the eastern wing of NATO, and increase Hungary’s security,” Ágnes Vadai said. Similar comments were made by representatives of other left-liberal opposition parties. Tamás Harangozó, MP of the Hungarian Socialist Party, called the government parties’ “procrastination” a disgrace.”

“In contrast, nationalist Mi Hazánk party MP Novák Előd called for a veto on Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership. According to the politician, the most important values are neutrality, peace, and sovereignty, while NATO enlargement can be seen as a provocation and risks starting a world war. He said that foreign troops have no place in Hungary.“

Which side would you support? The leftists socialists or the no war party?

Amazing how bloodthirsty the Lefties have become.

Remember how they used to hammer "warmonger" George W. Bush?

Might have something to do with Soros puppet strings...

He said that foreign troops have no place in Hungary.

Well then why not just drop out of NATO? Hungary has been a slacker ever since 1993 anyway.

Better yet, just dissolve NATO and the UN.

Slacker? Yeah right. How about giving Hungary props for building the fence that held back the invasion of Europe by military-age Muslim men? That did a lot more to secure Europe than anything NATO has done in the past 34 years (that is, since the end of the Cold War).

The question would seem to be, if 1/2 of (right wing) Fidesz party’s parliamentary caucus votes "no", is the other 1/2 plus the already supporting parties enough to pass? If so, these PM's with the ruffled feathers would appear to be getting a gov't paid junket north, but are otherwise of no consequence. Funny, how these things work.

Hungary was also the first of the Eastern bloc countries to remove their part of the Iron Curtain.

Plus, after nobody helped them in 1956, I don’t blame them.

Your so-called Hungarian “no-war” policy is the Hungarian nationalist party. The last time Hungarian nationalists had any power they joined the Tripartite Pact joining the Axis alliance of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan. The Pact was primarily directed at the United States, with the intent to deter the US from entering the war on the side of Britain. Hungary joined Germany in its invasions of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union.

To answer your question: If I had to make a choice between Finland and Hungary being in NATO, I’d pick Finland.

They are gearing up, know it or not, for serving in the kingdom of the beast. They don’t just lose, they will lose forever.

I'd probably be ok with the 2nd part of that.

However, dissolving NATO is just plain suicidal. And the eventual blow up might not even be triggered by Russia. Try thinking out the likely course(s) of following events for a generation or so.

Not really. Ever been there? Hungary built its own wall to keep out illegal immigrants.

There are no white hats in what you are referring to. Not in any of the various nations capitols involved. They are not following Christ in any of them. You need only look at the rampant support for homosexuals and the gendertwits to see the fruit of having been turned over to depraved minds.

But more to the secular point the Constitution does not give the federal power to engage in undeclared proxy wars, we should not be involved.

And they sure paid a severe price for it. All that is old history. Hungary is now a democratic country.

I find the topics very related, as the NATO member states, individually and through the EU (and ECHR), have everything to do with immigration / migration regulation and enforcement. Hungary got its hands dirty building the fence when the countries that are the big draws for immigration (all of which are NATO members), refused to address the problem. In terms of an invasion of NATO territory, illegal migration has been a bigger threat over the past three decades than the Russians, and that probably remains the case as the Russians clearly have their hands full in Ukraine and regardless of the outcome will require massive, time-consuming efforts before they can once again pose a threat of ground invasion to any countries beyond Ukraine (and perhaps Moldova).

Well it is old history yes, but I’ve been surprised by the strength of irredentist sentiment in Hungary.

The problem with the irredentist sentiment in Hungary is that they want the TERRITORY they “lost” due to the Trianon treaty returned.

That is not tenable - for the simple reason that the people living then and even now are not majority Magyar.

Far better is for campaigning for minority rights like Sud-Tirol or the Poles in Lithuania etc.

The Magyars, originally east Asian came to Europe and set up a huge empire based on the Pannonian basin - they intermarried with Slavs, Dacians, Celts etc to create the “Hungarian people” - and that doesn’t mention the Cumans who became the Szekely “Hungarians”

Basically, they can’t claim territory anymore as that would be chaos - yet they still seem to aspire to land size
