More than 1,000 principals from across the province told People for Education they're seeing more behavioural issues, lack of self-regulation, and unaddressed mental health challenges. Many also said they had no access to social workers and psychologists, though London-area principals did not raise that concern with CBC News.
But more and more mental health work is being downloaded onto principals and teachers, said Craig Smith, president of the local elementary teachers union.
There's an increasing demand for mental health services in all forms, and not a lot of resources, Smith said.
"There are plans but nothing really to adequately support the implementation of those plans to ensure that staff and students are receiving the support they need."
Teachers are not mental health professionals and cannot be delivering that kind of service, he added.
Some kids go "off the rails quicker," and others have longer or louder outbursts, Baker said, and teachers and administrators are always on the lookout for that. "I think we're all trying to do everything we can for everybody all the time as far as mental health, and there are a lot of resources in place for students and staff."
"The report correctly identifies that the staff, and by extension students and the system as a whole, are in a state of severe stress and maybe even distress when it comes to mental health issues and the supports required to help both students and staff deal with the situation we're in right now and where I think we will be in the immediate and longer-term future," Smith said.
"We have to take mental health issues seriously both for students and for staff, including teachers and principals, and that needs to happen with deliberate purpose and with due haste."

Might I suggest schools institute a regulation that all disruptive and harmful students must be accompanied by a parent through out the day. No parent, no admittance. Mom and dad will have to figure it out. Children have an absolute right to safety during school hours.
As though more than 50% of them have “mom and dad” at home.
Also, babies having babies. The parent (s) are not mature enough to parent.
No parenting produces that. Horrifying for teachers and the other kids.
Good parenting becomes merely a better coffee filter for water from the clogged toilet.

This would be great. Except how many of the kids are this way because their parents are? Schools would be stuck with two people throwing temper tantrums instead of one.

Can’t discipline the little monsters but they can send them to a gender mutilation clinic no problem.
A few weeks ago, apparently I pissed off a parent because I was teaching students about the first amendment? After trying to get my fired a couple of ways, she resorted to trying to have me arrested and have the school go on lockdown. IT IS A NIGHTMERE WORKING IN SCHOOLS and I am so glad that I am quitting mid April. But the lack of self-control is taught at home and reinforced negatively at school. My sister substitutes at an Elementary school occasionally, and they reward the poorly behaved children with pop and Cheetos.
The other thing is, you have TONS OF KIDS WITH Emotional Disabilities (ED), and you can’t get rid of them due to Federal Law. We had a kid throw a book at another student. Yep, battery. Guess what? They were back the next day! You can’t suspend, expel, or punish them. These are the kids that scare me, both while at school, at home, and when they go off to become adults.
Yeah, groomer teachers are cra-cra. Or just evil. Homeschool your children. Don’t let them anywhere near teachers.

Most pregnant women are not drinking g tested during pregnancy.. they don’t test the ones they suspect to be using drugs. Never saw such high levels of drugs, often multiple passes. The legalized pot kids ought too be in school. Image me a baby being bathed continuously in this miracle cure. But t hey, we cured cancer according the my pot smoking associates
