Face masks, once an essential Covid-19 protective measure, are now being worn by criminals to conceal their identities, according to New York police who are urging businesses to unmask customers before letting them in stores.
The recommendation is a 180-degree turn from mask-wearing norms at the onset of the pandemic. During peak periods of infection, federal agencies mandated mask-wearing in public places, while many businesses required customers to wear them on the premises.
Now, however, some businesses are banning customers from entering the premises with face masks on, saying the policy change is needed to identify thieves. And after numerous incidents, the New York Police Department is urging business owners to make shoppers remove their face masks and flash their features before being let in.
"We're seeing far too often where people are coming up to our businesses, sometimes with masks and latex gloves, and they're being buzzed in, they're being allowed to enter into the store and then we have a robbery or some kind of property being stolen," NYPD chief of department Jeffrey Maddrey said recently in an address to the local business community.

My local WF Bank in York, has a “no mask, no hat, no sunglasses” policy before entering. Fine by me. I still CCW.
Well well well. If it isn’t the consequences of my own decisions coming back to haunt me.
Makes me wonder if that was the whole purpose of masks in the first place: To help criminals.
The way to end shoplifting and the smash and grabs in NYC besides not voting democrap, would be to hire armed guards and have the doors locked anytime someone is stealing. And then you call the cops so they can make the arrest and of course they will be released, but it will stop the theft.
You bet! It kept the rioters' faces covered, for one thing.

I actually think muslims have the correct method in dealing with shoplifters.

Why do the cops care? Even if they bother to arrest them the perps will be let right out before the arrest paperwork is even done.
The person who is going to steal is going to obey this rule? Like the “Gun free zone” signs. The good guys obey, the bad guys do what they want.

I remember FReepers talking about this problem when they first started mandating masks. SHEESH.
Putting convicted shoplifters on chain gangs to clean up garbage and graffiti in their own neighborhoods would drastically reduce the number of shoplifters.
Yep, face mask mandates are the best thing for criminals since the invention of the Saturday night special.
When I see person wearing one alone in a car or riding a bicycle con a deserted sidewalk or some other scenario that really doesn’t seem to require one I’m pretty positive it’s to hide their identity.......a lot of black folks doing it......just my observation. ✋️
