Biden Challenged by Softening Public Support for Arming Ukraine
NYT via Yahoo ^ | March 2nd, 2023 | Peter Baker

WASHINGTON — When he made his surprise wartime trip to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv last week, President Joe Biden reassured that country with great confidence that “the Americans stand with you.” But the question that remains unanswered is: For how long?

For all of the president’s bravado while he was abroad, the politics of Ukraine back home in the United States are shifting noticeably and, for the White House, worryingly. Polls show public support for arming the Ukrainians softening while the two leading Republican presidential candidates are increasingly speaking out against involvement in the war.

While the bipartisan coalition in Congress favoring Ukraine has been strong in the year since Russia’s invasion, supporters of more aid fear the centrifugal forces of the emerging presidential contest and growing taxpayer fatigue with shipping tens of billions of dollars overseas may undercut the war effort before Moscow can be defeated. And some of them are frustrated that Biden has not done more to shore up support.

If only Biden cared about what the public wants...

This won’t change anything where Biden is concerned.

He has to continue to pay the Bribes to Zelensky so all of the Corruption that he, his son, Romney’s son, etc. was involved in does not see the light of day.

Why aren’t the tank plants running 24 hours a day in Germany and France and England if they are so worried about Russia?

Is he going to have to tell people that Oceania is at war with Eastasia instead of Eurasia?

That’s what happens when you steal elections. Nobody supports your agenda, because nobody ever supported your agenda to begin with.

When he made his surprise wartime trip to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv last week

The only person surprised when he woke up in Poland/Ukraine was Biden himself.

There are no tank plants. Not in Europe. Not in the US.

Manufacturing was sent to China decades ago. Contracts have to be signed with South Korea to get artillery shells made.

Russia did no outsource production to China.

A week or so ago, the CIA director Burns gave an interview with CBS describing his recent conversation with the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service.

He said it was a dispiriting conversation because the Russians are confident and have no fear of US or NATO weapons. They know the capabilities and their spies are as good as the CIA or better. They know we have no manufacturing to ramp up a WW II style production to overwhelm anyone at all. They know our $31Trillion in debt and they see the CBO projections of growing deficits to come, that start at this year’s $1T. Russia has nearly no debt. They know this. They feel time is on their side.

Burns did not say so, but . . . they are right.

"and growing taxpayer fatigue with shipping tens of billions of dollars overseas may undercut the war effort before Moscow can be defeated"

I don't recall a declaration of war against Russia.

As to the first part, I don't think its so much fatigue as anger. "Billions for Ukraine, not a dime for East Palestine, OH, USA" might have something to do with it.

Dudn’t see the interview, but was there any mention by Burns’ Russian counterpart along the lines of “besides, we know the 200 billion you sent to Ukraine isn’t really going to their war effort, but back into the pockets of your politicians and their confederates”.

There was no talk of corruption.

Personally, I think that is overdone in the US, as if corruption in the Ukraine is in some way abnormal.

Sometime read about how Madame Chiang (Chiang Kai Shek’s US educated wife) came to the US in the 1950s and explicitly bribed US congress people to withhold recognition of Mao and continue support for her husband. Then spend some time reading about how family members of US Congress candidates occupy senior positions on the campaign staff and draw millions.

The coven of War Vampires started this, without any realization of the realities for success, and but this policy direction without “off ramps.” Post modern education Dunning-Kreugher type failure at the highest levels, but only if this is not unrepentant evil.

Since when do Democrats - or the GOPe - care about what the public thinks?
The election fix is in (see my tagline). That’s all that matters.

So full speed ahead with Ukraine spending, insane green energy policies, etc.

And in between ignoring Ohio and giving billions to Ukraine, they take a moment here and there to cut social security.

I don’t live very far away from a steel mill that made tank and battleship armor during WW II. The mill is gone now. A dollar store sits in its place. The store sells nothing but cheap Chinese junk.

So in case of war, we can’t ramp up the mills in my area. Because there are no mills left in my area.
