DeSantis is a Republican establishment win-win
The Spectator ^ | 8/22/22 | Daniel McCarthy

Posted on 03/01/2023 5:31:57 AM PST by cotton1706

What’s left of the Bush-Cheney wing of the Republican Party doesn’t like Ron DeSantis. But it’s eager to see him run for president anyway. For if DeSantis challenges Trump for the 2024 GOP nomination, the old establishment stands to gain no matter who ultimately gets the nod. The Florida governor certainly seems to be ideologically closer to Trump-style populism than to the neoconservatism that prevailed among elite Republicans from the end of the Reagan era to the defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012. Why, then, would those who pine for the likes of Bush and Romney want to see a choice between Trump and DeSantis, both right-wing populists, two years from now?

snip

Thus, even though DeSantis may indeed be closer to Trump than to the old guard, he may prove to be an instrument for reducing the sway of populism within the party. And that’s true whether or not he actually beats Trump in the race for the nomination. What is important for the ideological future of the party is that there be an anti-Trump pole around which the old guard can coalesce. It may even be optimal for Trump’s GOP critics if DeSantis falls short of the nomination, so that he can be discarded in the favor of a more thoroughly conventional Republican in 2028, assuming (as the old guard generally does) that Trump loses in 2024 or for one reason or another cannot complete his term even if he wins.

DeSantis as a hybrid candidate, part-populist, part-conventional, holds promise for those who want to roll back the GOP’s turn toward populism.

Joy Reid: DeSantis More Authoritarian Than Trump, Hates Civil Rights”

On MSNBC’s The ReidOut, host Joy Reid melted down once again over Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. Proving how terrified the left is of DeSantis becoming the Republican nominee. According to Reid, DeSantis is a “more functionally authoritarian version of Trump” and would seek a return to a “Pre-civil rights America.”

***
Leftists, like Joy Reid, think DeSantis is more conservative than Trump, and they fear him.

The establishment really doesn’t care whether they win or not. They don’t care about what voters want. They only care about protecting their club.

The Bush’s have always been in favor of a “New World Order”. Doesn’t matter to them who’s in power as long as we get there.

DeSantis is Cruz 2.0. I am rejecting DeSantis for the same reason I rejected Ted Cruz in 2015. Cruz in an attempt to beat Donald Trump allied himself with the GOPe and after that he was dead to me. I still remember all of the rabid CruzBots on FR screaming at us incessantly to back their establishment candidate.

DeSantis had a chance to win me over until he sucked up to the GOPe and let them control him.

“They’re always scheming. They’re paid to.”

You follow this stuff closer than me. If the GOP bosses want DeSantis to be the nominee (or at least be strong enough to damage Trump), wouldn’t they be sending Jeb and people like him out to ATTACK him, rather than support him? Or are they just so full of themselves that think they’re actually helping DeSantis.

Um, why is Karl Rove consulting with him?

Exactly

I wonder if the author saw my threads yesterday? It cannot be a coincidence that we discussed this just yesterday!

Of course the corporate oligarchy is anti-populist. I’m still suspicious of DeSantis because he seems to be showboating his “populism” by grabbing some low hanging fruit in the culture wars, as though opposing Communist indoctrination in the classroom and shoving a few illegals on buses to New York is difficult. What’s his position on “free” trade with China? How does he propose dealing with our open border?

“DeSantis as a hybrid candidate, part-populist, part-conventional, holds promise for those who want to roll back the GOP’s turn toward populism.”
*****************************************

If the GOP turns away from Trump’s populism they will become irrelevant as a party and unlikely to win the presidency ever again. Populism just means Trump is doing the will of the people who support him, while “conventional” Republicans do the will of the donors/elites. You can’t have it both ways.

What the establishment Republicans don’t realize is that their club is dead. They have about as much relevance in our new Marxist country as a church knitting club in a crack house.

daddy bush was defeated because of his infamous lie “No new taxes”. Baby bush is now easily dismissed as a complete moron and liar with 3 simple words: “weapons of mass destruction”.

DeSantis is the only and the best choice for Trump’s team. I hope the 2 are just playing rope-a-dope and have planned a combined ticket all along.

DJT pushing the poisonous covid inoculation and still bantering about how great he is for doing sir (even after the facts are biting him in the arse) is inexcusable. It’s not a fringe issue among others. It’s central to his character.

Yep. The hypocricy is cited in the first two replies in this thread. They are attacking DeSantis from both sides. Claiming he is Trump-lite and even a Bush-establishment republican from one side, and claiming he is just as evil (if not more) than Trump and the sky will be falling again.

These people GET PAID to propagandize. There’s no gun to their head. No threats of a gulag. They’re good little minions.

We need MAGA much more than a social conservative to save America. There is only one candidate...PDJT.

Trump still has a blind spot when it comes to the vaxx, probably because he hates to admit he might have been wrong about something. But there is also political reasons, much of the public still believes in the vaxx and Trump doesn’t want to alienate those voters by venturing into what the press will characterize as conspiracy theories. Let’s hope he changes his mind as more evidence about the dangers and ineffectiveness of the vaxx emerges.
