Iran’s Islamic Republic is collapsing before our eyes
Washington Examiner ^ | 2-28-23 | Michael Rubin

Iran's currency is in free-fall, falling almost 10% over the weekend, breaking through the psychologically important half-million mark to more than 600,000 rials to the dollar. The plunging currency led the Tehran bazaar to close, an event that preceded the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Just a few dozen miles across the border, Iraqi Kurds were watching developments closely, questioning how quickly the rial rate could fall below 1 million and the consequences.

600 thousand rials to a dollar? 6,000 to a penny?

Is their currency essentially worthless?

I believe there are still a number of smallish countries which choose to use US greenbacks rather than issue their own currency?

Iran has used Rials & Toman as their currency since the 1800’s, I believe.

Iran is the root of evil in the world for terrorism. This would be a God send.

We have a “Royal Isfahan” carpet from Iran that belonged to my husband’s granparents who bought it sometime around WW2. It goes with nothing in our rustic style home but it is absolutely beautiful and even after about eighty years of use it looks brand new!

I wonder if the Iranians still make carpets of this amazing quality or like everyone else are they just reselling cheap crap from China?

What matters is who has the guns, not the strength of the currency or the silent grumbling of the people.

I just read an article on FR that said Biden was ready to pay Iran $9 billion for a prisoner exchange.

yes, oldpro, I’ve been reading stories like this for quite a while. And have heard them as well - I have a few friends who are those who escaped from the Ayatollah’s Iran and they constantly hope for this.

The only positive thing I can see from the Ayatollahs’ reigns are that they have utterly destroyed any religiosity in Iran. They have belief % like France or the UK or lower and the hatred for Islam as their subjugator is even higher

Ruy The people of Iran have the very government their parents and grandparents rioted for in 1979.

No, they do not

The revolution that overthrew the Shah was a mix of everyone from the religious to socialists, nationalists - basically everyone who opposed the Shah's autocratic rule

Then the Islamic party basically killed over everyone else and took over

This was a parallel to what happened in 1917 in Russia - the March revolution overthrew the Tsar and the October revolution was the Bolsheviks killing off the other guys.

General, across the board civilization collapse happens every 1500 to 2000 years. I am convinced we are in one now. Late bronze age and the Roman collapse were the last two.

I think future historians will mark the moon landings as the pinnacle of our civilization.

We watched his landing on TV. The unsmiling face, the people mobbing him. If he touched one that person went into fits of ecstasy!
Not long after they took over the Aemrican Embassy holding the people hostage till Reagan was sworn in.

They got what they wanted and demanded. Now suffer!

I still get a kick of watching the Ayatollah’s body fall off his casket during his funeral.

It’s even better when you speed it up and play Yakkety Sax to it.
