Here’s why automatic firearms aren’t practical in real life
WE ARE THE MIGHTY via msn ^ | 27 feb 2023 | Tim Kirkpatrick

You must have seen a movie in which the protagonists empties their entire magazine through automatic fire and hits the target every single time. And if you’re a fan of video games, you must have played at least one first-person shooter that made you believe that automatic weapons essentially turn you into a god of war. Unfortunately, that’s the literal opposite of what the truth is, as automatic firearms aren’t used like that in real-life combat, and here’s why.

Automatic fire is inaccurate In real life, if they have the option to choose their rate of fire, professionals like to stick to single-fire mode. Why? Because automatic fire is inaccurate.

What video games and movies don’t depict correctly is the insane recoil automatic fire causes.

My range had a Valentine's Day full-auto shoot and dinner. My wife and I split a 50 rd box of 9mm. The firearm was a Glock 18. I was able to keep all my shots on the paper, but I was surprised that the barrel did a climb to "high right" due to the effect of both the recoil and the rifling. I did have enough total rounds to develop a good firm grip to counter the muzzle rise before using all 25 of my rounds. My wife did just fine with it as well. It was an interesting experience as a rental. I can't see much value it owning one. I much prefer aimed fire and do just fine in that mode.

Retired Chicago area cop buddy sent me a pic from the 30s showing some of the cops holding tommy guns. I asked why and he replied “Gangs”.

There was a reason why the kill rates in AFG and Iraq were so different. Our soldiers had trained to one-shot, one-kill standards and killed their targets. Pretty much every single force we faced or chased in the AO was trained in pray and spray, if Allah wants the target dead, it won’t matter where you aim.

The problem was that throwing enough rounds and IEDs downrange, you sooner or later got lucky. And then they ululated as if they had just won the war.

This is a “camel’s nose” argument.

If it’s ok to ban one thing because of some reason, then the premise that the government gets to decide is made, and the rest is merely ceremonial.

I don’t want an auto firearm for myself, but they must be (re)-allowed or all rights are just waiting for “you don’t need that” to die.

The M14 was a real “climber”. I never got more than one bullet on target with full auto.

I’ve never fired an M16, but I have fired an AR15 as rapidly as I could pull the trigger, and the recoil was surprisingly mild.

Also, I don’t want to fund the spray and pray. But I would like the option.

Right there, stopped reading.

The writer does not know shiite about full auto capable weapons.

The M-14 was the only full auto firearm I shot that came close to being uncontrollable, at least before the magazine was empty.

The M-15 bipod was a game changer. Buddy go one and the thing was like a BAR prone. No muzzle climb.

Weird, as we both had no luck hitting anything from the hip or offhand. One round on target and then all over. My rifle got so hot shooting full auto I had to use my cover over the top to hold it down.

Strangely enough it works that way in laser tag too - if you fire all the time you make yourself a target.

What is the prrpose of articles like this?

Just another covert attack to weaken the 2nd Amendment to fix a problem that doesn't exist?

700 horsepower cars that can do an honest 160 miles per hour or more aren't practical in real life either.

And there are about 10,000 auto crash deaths per year attributed to speeding.

Yet there are no Karens or other busy-body do-gooders constantly questioning the legal sale and possession of high powered super-cars.

On the other hand, how many deaths per year are there from abuse of fully automatic firearms in the USA?

"Only two incidents have been recorded since 1934: one was a doctor or dentist
(exact details are sketchy) who used his legally owned sub-machine gun in a
murder. The other is much more well known, on September 15th, 1988, Patrolman
Roger Waller of the Dayton, OH police department, used his fully automatic
MAC-11 .380 caliber sub-machine gun to kill a police informant. Waller plead guilty
in 1990, and he and an accomplice were sentenced to 18 years in prison."

The M-14 sure did blow through a magazine in a hurry. The guy next to be put about 8 rounds of spent brass down my shirt collar. It is difficult to dance and shoot at the same time.

The insurance companies take care of that by screwing you on rates.

LOL ! I’ve seen a couple of Ladies that did some very fancy dancing after a case or two landed in their cleavage with the help of a low cut shirt and gusty winds.
