Gov. Ron DeSantis has assumed control of the board that oversees development at Walt Disney World, seizing leverage over the state’s largest employer and retaliating against the entertainment giant for opposing the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law.
“Today, the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” he said Monday at a bill signing ceremony on Disney property. “There’s a new sheriff in town, and accountability will be the order of the day.”
Under the law, effective immediately, DeSantis has the authority to appoint every member of the special tax district’s five-member governing body subject to approval by the state Senate. At the news conference, DeSantis said Florida attorney Martin Garcia will serve as chairman. The board will include Brian Aungst Jr., a lawyer and son of a former Republican mayor of one of Florida’s largest cities, Christian Ziegler Bridget Ziegler, a conservative school board member and wife of the Florida Republican party chairman, Ron Peri, CEO of The Gathering USA Ministry, and attorney Michael Sasso, he added.

I suppose it's possible that there's a game plan to whittle away at these other ridiculous perks that were given Disney. Wait a while and maybe the governing board asks the legislature to make a little change here and a little change there. This is what we're going to have to wait and see.
But under the bill, Disney would retain almost all of its exemptions from a host of regulations, taxes and fees in addition to powers allowing it to act much like its own government, including the issuance of bonds.
Considering that Jeb Bush just endorsed DeSantis, that should tell you everything you need to know about Meatball Ron.

I wouldn’t call a Jeb Bush endorsement the kiss of death in this instance necessarily. Ever since “low-energy” Jeb was getting stuffed into his locker daily by Trump, I think he’s been burning with resentment and would see that Trump was defeated by any means necessary.
What a marvelous visual!
Yes. Perfect timing—coincides with his book publication by Ruport Murdoch and and hours long “interviews”, i.e. campaign advertising, on FOX News. This guy is managed and funded by so many bad actors its hard to keep up with them.
Well, Jeb is a Bush and as a Bush he was entitled to the nomination so of course he hates Trump. That and he’s got a garage full of Guacobowls that he can’t get rid of—makes him cranky everything he goes in there.
This story has triggered so many Leftists on mainstream sites’ comments’ sections, it is hilarious.
They are in a tizzy and giving Huffington Post takes. However, liberal news sites WashCompost, Axios, Politico all have articles dispelling the far left takes on this.
>Not how I see it. Their governing board has been REPLACED with conservatives.<
Actually they are fortunate to have a governing board of conservatives. The board will be run like a business i.e. efficiently.
The board has taxing authority, Disney deserves a board of liberals who like high taxes and hate rich people.
EC
You deserve the government you get.
It’s been hard to forgive Ted Cruz, after he betrayed Trump at the RNC Convention, willing to give us Hillary.
Same would be true of Trump, as he threatened to not support the GOP winner. I’m a Trump loyalist, I’ll be voting against Leftism, no matter who wins.
Thank you!
Really? Republicans and conservatives usually like “privatization.” This is government takeover over the exceptionally run Reedy Creek. While you may not like Disney’s wokeism, who does, a new government is going to be hard pressed to improve the function of Reedy Creek. I am sure there are other water districts or democrat run cities that would be better served than a district that should be a model to follow. DeSantis needs to address homeowners’ insurance and the Everglades in very, very meaningful ways.
Ya know, if DeSantis is a bad guy then I want lots more of these bad guys!
Disney had control over their "own city" (reedy creek district), and chose not to be taxed by Florida. They could build what they wanted without having a state inspector make sure the building was safe. They tossed Southern Standard Building Codes out the window... everything was as THEY wanted to call it. Disney had fire departments and police departments that ONLY met their standards. Same with environmental issue. DeSantis took that away.. It wasn't a small deal it was a big deal and NO ONE before DeSantis had the guts to take on Disney.
This should have been done 50 years ago...
Please see the last paragraph in my post number 21
HB 9-B ends Disney’s self-governing status and imposes a five-member state control board that is appointed by the Governor and subject to Senate confirmation.
This legislation amends the Reedy Creek Improvement District charter which:
ENDS Disney’s self-governing status.
ENDS Disney’s exemption from the Florida Building Code and Florida Fire Prevention Code.
ENDS Disney’s exemption from state regulatory reviews and approvals.
ENDS Disney’s secrecy by ensuring transparency.
ENSURES that Disney will pay its fair share of taxes.
PREVENTS leftist local governments from using the situation to raise local taxes.
IMPOSES Florida law so that Disney is no longer given preferential treatment.
ENSURES that Disney’s municipal debt will be paid by Disney, not Florida taxpayers.

Disney didn’t skate...
Thanks for the info.
If he runs for Prez for 2024, I’m not voting for him in the primary.
