Gov. Ron DeSantis has assumed control of the board that oversees development at Walt Disney World, seizing leverage over the state’s largest employer and retaliating against the entertainment giant for opposing the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law.
“Today, the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” he said Monday at a bill signing ceremony on Disney property. “There’s a new sheriff in town, and accountability will be the order of the day.”
Under the law, effective immediately, DeSantis has the authority to appoint every member of the special tax district’s five-member governing body subject to approval by the state Senate. At the news conference, DeSantis said Florida attorney Martin Garcia will serve as chairman. The board will include Brian Aungst Jr., a lawyer and son of a former Republican mayor of one of Florida’s largest cities, Christian Ziegler Bridget Ziegler, a conservative school board member and wife of the Florida Republican party chairman, Ron Peri, CEO of The Gathering USA Ministry, and attorney Michael Sasso, he added.

Can you believe how quickly this was done? I've never seen a Governor move so quickly to accomplish a goal he set out to accomplish. Disney corporate leadership knew better, but instead of adhering to their creator's principles regarding entertainment, they folded to the screeching few in the front row. Who would invest their money in such a company?
Of course, we will see if DeSantis' actions actually have teeth and Disney no longer is allowed to be a law unto itself. It may just go on before with the special tax benefits that other towns, entertainment parks, and tourist attractions are not afforded. Is DeSantis all glitter and no gold? I guess time will tell.
Well played by governor desantis.
I read awhile back that the bill is not what people think it is. Maybe Disney still has a lot more control than we think.
Now treated equally like any other business / theme park in Florida...
I smell the fear - and love it.
While it is not nothing, it’s a long way from *something*.
In the final analysis, Disney has still pretty much skated.
Even if Disney were the all American apple pie institution, that would not justify everything it has been given in Florida. Just the government being the whore that it is. And what is being rescinded is just a little bit of the icing off the free cake.
DeSantis has scored a PR victory - and that does matter. But we have to acknowledge outside of that, Disney isn’t taking much of a hit.
This action was obviously done based on consultations with Paul Ryno as preparation for a 2024 Presidential campaign. /sarc
I would certainly hope not. They are groomers extraordinaire.
Lol….probably true!
DeSanctus was so proud of himself, announcing this, on Tucker, tonight.
All I could think was….what took three + years to do this?
Disney checks had to clear?
“This action was obviously done based on consultations with Paul Ryno as preparation for a 2024 Presidential campaign.”
While you and I are usually on the same page, I took out your SARCASM tag because the FIRST thought that came to mind is that DeSantis is going to do all kinds of ‘things’ in the upcoming months that makes him appealing to Middle America. I’m convinced that he’s running.
As much as I LOVED Governor Scott Walker, I’m still not convinced that De Santis isn’t in the same mold as a RINO in Conservative Clothing.
President Bush had me fooled, as did Paul Ryan and a few others along the way.
We shall see. I want more rubber hitting the road before I make my final decisions.
The nail in Disney’s coffin was the woke and perversion agenda
“… Can you believe how quickly this was done? I’ve never seen a Governor move so quickly to accomplish a goal he set out to accomplish….”

Mama always said “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. Mama might have stolen that line from someone. 😊
Well, Disney is listed here in the top 5 of all donors to Trump in both 2016 and 2020, so if he and DeSantis are going separate ways this could be a reason....

It’s over for Disney.
Reedy Creek was set up for Walt Disney because Orlando was a fairly small town back when Disney moved in with their stories of building a ‘gas plant’ as a cover story to get people to sell them land. Orlando didn’t have the people to oversee that building codes were adhered to...
But...
Walt Disney’s standards were so high - Orlando and the State gave them free reign. It made sense at the time. And that’s now over.
That's some serious creativity to try to criticize something that was many decades in the making that no other governor pushed for. "All I could think was…that took three + years to do this?" Really?
Interesting...
“In the final analysis, Disney has still pretty much skated.”
Not how I see it. Their governing board has been REPLACED with conservatives.
Now the REAL work begins. Give the new board a “minute”.
They never should have had this status in the fist place. I say this on general principles, and not because of Disney’s more recent depredations.
Maybe, but my understanding is that much of the tens of thousand of acres has no infrastructure. No roads, no utilities, etc. I think Florida did ok in having Disney essentially finance all that development .
