"Trader Joe's will continue to hire on-site staff as the company believes its employees are more important than the glitz and the glamour of self-checkout.
“The bottom line here is that our people remain our most valued resource," Tara Miller, Trader Joe's vice president of marketing, said on the Inside Trader Joe's podcast.
“While other retailers were cutting staff and adding things like self-checkout, curbside pickup, and outsourcing delivery options, we were hiring more crew, and we continue to do that.”
She added: "Our crew will be in our stores to help you find your next favorite product, just as they've always been.”
(I think they want this to be like a universal database that can be used in other places like getting into sporting events.)
Pretty much how it’s marketed, showing a bar, work, burger place.
(I’m not doing it ever)
Good. One day something similar will be mandatory.
(Amazon One will be added to the store’s entry gate as a convenient choice for customers to use to enter the store to shop...)
And there it is.
The next step.
Bears watching.
Stupid...they sell by the unit apples at $1.80 each...better prices and quality atthe local Korean supermarket
And whole foods sucks.
Trader Joe’s has some of the best employees much like Chik fil A.
Not if they’re telling me to wear a stupid mask, they’re not.
Yes, self-checkout theft will be the end of it.

That appears to be the case at the Home Depot in Bonita Springs, FL.
Good for them.
Aldi is owned by the same German family that owns Trader Joe’s. Aldi is busy installing self checkout right now in my neck of Florida. Only a matter of time until TJ’s does it, too.
Yeah. Cost of labor vs mechanization. Grocery scanner employees are low skill jobs and low hanging fruit.
“I swiped my Amazon Prime Card and it didn’t do anything for me.”
i think one has to sign up for something called “amazon go” and use a special app to get in the door, all based on pre-submitting your palm print in their biometric database ...
this procedure is apparently still limited to a just a handful of stores in three VERY blue states right now (CA, IL, NY) ... they CLAIM it’s an “option” for entry, though ... maybe it’s mandatory now, don’t know ... if true, seems like a way to drive off even more regular folks even more than their usual stupidity ...
“I think they want this to be like a universal database that can be used in other places like getting into sporting events.”
yep, i read that’s their plan ...
“Love self checkout. Cashier lines always take forever:”
totally, esp. at places like sam’s warehouse or walmart ... moronic customers (lots of illegal aliens) who have serious trouble working a CC or debit card, dispute prices, don’t have enough money, can’t speakade englis, old folks writing checks ... and much, much more ...
self-checkout: slam, bam, thank you maam ... AND an attendant to zip over and instantly solve any problems ...
Wow. That is all insane.
A kid wiping down carts outside the store was the only one of the things you listed that our store did here. For a while anyway.
I did go in one store during that craziness that had the stupid arrows on the floors in the aisles. (Sam’s, I think.) I went the opposite way of the arrows just to be contrary and I saw at least one other person doing the same. Nobody seemed to mind.
That whole ordeal sure showed everybody who the real power-trippers were.
Gotta see this one!
“Whatever gimmick they try to sell this with, it is nothing short of a draconian surveillance system.”

A young person once told me, very proudly, that Trader Joe’s would only locate stores in areas where the majority of people had bachelor degrees. Her cute face went blank when I asked, so you need a BA to buy processed food?
I don’t have a news link to it. I could only find that twitter link the lady recorded.
Agreed. As long as they have an attendant or two at self checkout, it usually goes really fast. Here in NJ though you have to bring your own bags (thanks to $@“&? Gov Murphy and the assembly).
